Subject: Temporary Building Boom Precedes Guantanamo Terror Trial
(Nov. 7, 2007, Canada.com)
"The Pentagon shelved plans to build a massive - and permanent - $125-million legal complex after the Miami Herald revealed details in September of the extravagant proposal. The Pentagon originally envisioned housing for 1,200 people, dining facilities for 800 and a 100-car motor pool.
"The scaled-back, temporary tent city, scheduled for completion in February, is decidedly more spartan. A crew of Air National Guard workers has set up 80 air-conditioned personnel tents at McCalla Field, a former air strip that was most recently used in the 1990s to house thousands of Cuban and Haitian refugees.
"The portable legal complex will be able to house up to 500 lawyers, media and support personnel for future trials. In addition, about 20 tents are set aside for "miscellaneous" uses, including communal restroom, shower and laundry facilities."
