'Stand With John' ...by Dan DeWalt

Once again, a solitary citizen has acted on his conscience and taken an action that should inspire us all to step up and pitch in.

John Nirenberg, a 60 year old retired academic, a man who had never considered himself an activist, realized that he could no longer abide the general state of depression and shame that he felt as an American being "represented" by the Bush administration's policies of torture, aggressive war and trampling on civil liberties.

Realizing that impeachment is the only way that this cabal can be stopped, and understanding that the Constitution requires impeachment in such times, Nirenberg has embarked on a walk from Boston to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's office in Washington D.C., where he will tell the Speaker to put impeachment back on the table.

In fact, Pelosi has abused her office by thinking that she had the prerogative to take it off of the table in the first place. While she and her Democratic cohorts have proven themselves submissive and subservient to Bush/Cheney, whom they were elected to oppose, they have shown themselves remarkably cavalier about ignoring the Constitution, to which they took an oath of office to uphold and defend.

John decided to take this walk entirely on his own, with no organization or infrastructure supporting the journey or helping to publicize it. But within days, activists, citizens and organizations came on board and have helped him to connect with a network of Americans who will be joining him in their towns when he comes through.

And this is where you can help out. Go to John's website www.marchinmyname.org and add your name to the thousands calling for impeachment that he hopes to dump on Pelosi's desk when he arrives in early January. In addition to your name, John wants photos and testimonials that he can deliver – items that can't be discarded with the touch of a delete button. You can mail them to PO Box 17, South Newfane VT 05351, and I will get them to him before he reaches D.C.

John is walking along U.S. highway 1 following the coast until he heads inland to D.C. Check out his itinerary and spread the word to anyone you know who lives along the east coast. If people can shake off some of their lethargy and hopelessness, we could make this into a major peoples' march that our sniveling and cowardly politicians won't be able to ignore.

Reactions posted on his website show that, although the vast majority of Americans who know about this are excited and appreciative, there are those who see him as a traitor and would like to see his project come to a bad end. We must mobilize ourselves to stand with John, and show him that those who have the courage to oppose illegal and immoral government will enjoy the support and assistance of the American people. Only if we pitch in and add our voices, will John be able to realize his goal of making a difference in changing the course of this failing democracy.

Dan DeWalt is a woodworker and selectboard member in the town of Newfane, Vermont, and the author of a successful town resolution calling for the impeachment of President Bush.

2. I don't think it should be put on the table. It should be put in the
face of the cowards in Congress every day. :dem:

3. Inspiring! Thing is,...ANY ACTION is a good and noble one on this stand.
A phone call.

An email.

A ltte.

A conversation.

At least, by taking ANY ACTION, a contribution is made towards one of the most basic principles of any democratic nation,...in this case, OURS: the rule of law applies to ALL.

5. You don't get it. Impeachment ain't the answer. The Democratic Party is in the shit up to their
ears. Nancy says impeachment is off the table. The Democratic Party has spoken. Your emails, petitions, letters, heroic walks, phone calls are all for naught. There will be no impeachment. There will be no accountability. They all belong to the same club and we are not invited. Sign petitions, write emails and letters, make your phone calls, and live in delusion. Those in Washington DC all belong to the same club. Yes they may squabble once in a while but they will not punish each other. The Democratic leaders will let Bushcorp off Scott free.

9. in what imaginary world could/would pelosi or reid be impeached
Why not suggest that we put them in a rocket ship and send them to planet nebloton. Its as realistic.

14. Why not use our imagination
Much of our failures come from not being able to imagine the impossible happening. The powers that be have a stranglehold on our minds, which we must throw off if we hope to regain power in this country ever.

17. its fantasy to think that the current members of the House and Senate
Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 12:34 PM by onenote
would impeach and convict Pelosi and Reid (even assuming that they could be removed from their current posts as Speaker and Majority Leader through impeachment, which is highly dubious). If you can offer a realistic scenario where that could happen, I invite you to do so. I prefer to apply my imagination to the real world, not fantasyland.

18. Well I prefer to think of ways we can take back America
And then talk to people about doing it.

I don't subscribe to defeatist mentalities---people who speak of visions being products of Fantasyland. I think we can impeach Cheney and Bush...no wait, we must. And you know what, if it means the movement needs to threaten the job security of Pelosi and Reid, so be it.

Cindy Sheehan (bless her soul) is already running against Nancy Pelosi. Someone should be looking to take Reid's seat the next time he runs for re-election.

The people who have failed us need to be kicked out. Our fight does not end when Bush leaves. It ends when we have carried out justice.

19. running against pelosi and reid is far different than "impeaching" them
But I assume you know that and are just changing the course of the discussion rather than admit the impeachment suggestion was silly.

20. I never said anything about impeaching them
You added that idea into what I said.

So, to clarify, what I meant was that we imagine a better world and pursue it by removing people like Pelosi and Reid from power.

16. gee
it seems like I've said this a few thousand times already, but congressmembers can't be impeached.

And I'll pre-emptively answer the response by saying they can't be recalled, either.

8. Here we go again.
Trying to discourage us. Just because you may view something as a lost cause doesn't mean it really is. Those of us united on this issue are going to keep pushing and pushing until we get results. For all you know, it could be something that was really worth it in the end.

11. I am not trying to discourage but open eyes. I will continue pushing.
But there are a lot of people that I believe are self deluded. They think writing emails is effective. I don't believe it is. I want us to continue pushing but do not want to waste our efforts. There is only one way to remove a Democratic incumbent and that is to vote for a republican. If you know of any cases where incumbents Democrats were successfully challenged in the primary, please enlighten me. So if an incumbent is guaranteed a pass in the primary, why would they pay attention to your emails? Now I do believe they pay some attention, but in the long haul, they go with the beltway club. It appears that there will be no punishment for the criminal republicans. Ask yourself why? Pelosi said that impeachment is off the table. She didn't ask the Democratic grassroots and is not yielding to the 70% of Democrats screaming for impeachment. Why? She knows she is guaranteed to be supported by the Party in the primary. We must try to individually get active in local and state party politics to help change the terrible incumbent for life method. And we must never support a candidate (DINO) that doesn't support our principles. No partisan organizations like Moveon.org have a chance to influence, but the Democratic Party is completely in the control of the rich and powerful beltway club.

Writing emails and making calls are easy and make you feel good about yourself. Continue, I will, but just realize that you need to do more if we are going to fix the system.
