3. I'm sorry but you have explained nothing.
Which functions of government? All of them? Some of them? I'm sure you know exactly what you mean, but that is such an absurdly broad category that I simply cannot answer the question.

7. Depends on the area of the economy
I like socialized roads, but I'm leery of socialized record shops.

11. With socialized, you remove rent-seeking or profit-taking from the total price of operations.
Edited on Thu Dec-06-07 08:27 PM by Selatius
When you add back in rent-seeking/profit-taking, the cost of operations invariably rises. A for-profit entity exists to make a profit. It can't make a profit unless it charges more than the total cost of delivering a good or service by tacking on a profit mark-up.

In perfect competition, the theoretical price of a good or service drops down to simply the cost of operations due to competition, but that assumes there is an infinite number of competitors in the market. That's never going to happen.

Therefore, if you privatize, say, a public school and turn it into a privately-owned institution, you're screwing yourself out of a lot of money because there will never be an infinite amount of competitors who can directly compete with the company. The same applies to privatizing interstates or public highways and roads.

Of course, I must ask: Which functions of government????????????????
