CIA analysts willing to ‘go to jail’ to ensure NIE’s release
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/12/07/cia-analysts-willing-to-go-to-jail-to-ensure-nies-release/

Retired Col. W. Patrick Lang, a former official in the Defense Intelligence Agency, reveals that senior CIA analysts pushed for the NIE’s key judgments on Iran to be released, threatening to speak to the media if they weren’t:

The “jungle telegraph” in Washington is booming with news of the Iran NIE. I am told that the reason the conclusions of the NIE were released is that it was communicated to the White House that “intelligence career seniors were lined up to go to jail if necessary” if the document’s gist were not given to the public. Translation? Someone in that group would have gone to the media “on the record” to disclose its contents.

1. So do we need to be more fearful of what they will do now having been pushed into
a corner unwillingly? What occurs when a rapid animal becomes cornered?

26. well, usually, i would imagine a professional is brought in and the
animal is put down. oh wait. that would be a rabid animal. you said "rapid."

on that note, i would imagine a rapid animal takes a quick break, having been cornered, and then runs off quickly.

They are putting their lives on the line. I have first-hand experience of how ruthless * Gang can be.

There are many who have already given their lives for the truth.

7. It's so disturbing that we've come to this.
That these people have to be willing TO GO TO JAIL for insisting on the truth.

If I believed in a sky god, I'd be calling on him/her right about now.

I used to translate for the DEA and yeah, those boundaries used to be on the honor system. Back when there was honor.

9. Look at the Whistle Blowers, the fired DOJA's, Diplomats who've Signed Statements in the NYT
trying to be heard for years. So many people have tried to expose these criminals and Harry Reid wrings his hands and Nancy says "we are too busy doing the people's work" and Waxman, Conyers and Leahy write stern letters and hold hearings.

Seven Years of people in Government speaking out about the abuses, writing books and doing everything they could. And a MSM that gives them a few minutes of time if they are selling a book or have some kind of pull...and then they move on to the latest female they want to expose in a scandal.

So many people trying to do something about this Criminal Enterprise and so little attention. It becomes a one day story and then we move on to another atrocity.

Actually, they were public enough for me to read several articles about CIA saying "NO WMD". I guess after taking the blame then, they mustered more political muscle this time to avoid the repeat. Glad they did.

who ARE IN SERVICE TO OUR NATION.

And it has long been evident there is a less-than-civil war going on between those who actually serve the nation and those who expect the nation to serve them.

There are lots of decent, brave people who do love America.

We owe them support.

This means that parts of the NIE assessment were held back as part of a deal. Something even worse was going to be revealed if Dick Cheney's office allowed this to be released.

have amounted to nearly a life term, but he released the pentagon papers about the war in vietnam. and in every talk he gives now, he pleads that those who had access to share the secrets. I think some people have been listening.

I think the world has been spared a war because of this.. despite the continued work of the war lobbies to thwart this, the damage to their side has been done. i hope and pray it is a fatal blow, at least in regard to an attack against Iran.

Neocons making the company the scapegoat as they hollowed out this great nation. Then they blame the CIA. There are sharp, true-blue folks in there. And 'Naval Intelligence' is NOT an oxymoron. There are some stunningly brilliant people working for this country in there.

Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 09:58 PM by Canuckistanian
The CIA may be guilty of many things, but BLAMING them for the president's own faults is a new one.

The Company is not used to sabotage and scapegoating from their own bosses.

33. Intelligence expert who rewrote book on Iran
Report has torpedoed plans for military action and brought 'howls' from neocons

<snip>

"The intelligence came from an exotic variety of sources: there was the so-called Laptop of Death; there was the Iranian commander who mysteriously disappeared in Turkey. Also in the mix was video footage of a nuclear plant in central Iran and intercepts of Iranian telephone calls by the British listening station GCHQ.

But pivotal to the US investigation into Iran's suspect nuclear weapons programme was the work of a little-known intelligence specialist, Thomas Fingar. He was the principal author of an intelligence report published on Monday that concluded Iran, contrary to previous US claims, had halted its covert programme four years ago and had not restarted it. Almost single-handedly he has stopped - or, at the very least, postponed - any US military action against Iran.

His report marks a decisive moment in the battle between American neoconservatives and Washington's foreign policy and intelligence professionals - between ideologues and pragmatists. It provided an unexpected victory for those opposed to the neocon plans for a military strike.

The report, the National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which represents the consensus of the 16 US intelligence agencies, gave President George Bush one of his most difficult weeks since taking office in January 2001.

Fingar's findings were met in many Washington offices occupied by foreign policy and intelligence professionals not only with relief but with rejoicing. They had lost out in the run-up to the war in Iraq in 2003, but they are winning this one."
