Peasants Storm Brazil Syngenta Farm
I'm still trying to find out more details about this ocupation and protest, but I do know for certain that the earlier one that was the catalyst for this one Syngenta was in violation of a number of Brazilian laws and regs, starting with the growing of the GMOs in that locale from the get go and the fact that they had armed guards. Armed guards as in Blackwater-like militia type armed guards. Up the Rebels!

Peasants Storm Brazil Syngenta Farm

By Associated Press December 10, 2007

Activists stormed a Swiss-owned farm in northeastern Brazil on Monday to protest biotech crops and the killing of an activist during a similar protest at another farm earlier this year.

Joao Paulo Pereira, a coordinator of the peasants rights group Via Campesina, said hundreds of protesters overran the farm belong to Syngenta AG near the town of Cajazeiras, blocking access to workers, knocking down fences and destroying some greenhouses before leaving.

In a statement, Syngenta said about 80 protesters took part in the events and that none of its employees were at the site at the time: security personnel were told to leave the property in order to avoid any conflicts.

Pereira said the protest was part of the group's "Syngenta Out of Brazil" campaign and was timed to coincide with International Human Rights Day. The group is seeking to have Brazil eliminate genetically modified crops, which it believes harm small farmers and may prove unhealthy for human consumption.

He said the protest commemorated the death of activist Valmir Mota de Oliveira, killed during a protest at Syngenta farm in southern Brazil earlier this year.

7. The descent of the descendants.
That is damned good.

Now if only they could see themselves as we see them.

4. I'm very glad none of the protestors were injured or killed. Brave folks, good on them!
I'd like to see every last GMO company on the planet overrun and their franken-plants utterly destroyed.

We the people need to take back our planet and our food supply.

Bless those brave Brazilians!

9. I just saw a documentary on environmental refugees
And prominent in the documentary was the plight of some traditional Brazilian farmers.

Many of them had their land bought out in order to plant vast monocultures of Eucalyptus trees.

Why? To provide cellulose for the Brazilian paper company, Aracruz Celulose and others. Aracruz Celulose is a leading provider of pulp for things such as toilet paper around the world.

The farmers were forced to sell out at a bargain price. Those that refused were left with tiny plots of land, surrounded by Eucalyptus tree forests.

The remaining farmers faced ruin, because the Eucalyptus trees sucked up all the water, drying up streams. And the pesticide spraying (using compounds containing lead and cyanide) killed off native species of plants, animals and insects, leaving only destructive termites. Most traditional crops failed.

To make it worse, the farmers were forced to work on making charcoal from the excess Eucalyptus trees to make a living. The constant smoke from the charcoal burners was making the children sick.

I don't blame these activists one bit.
