WASHINGTON -- Roughly a dozen renewable energy advocates sat on the floor of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's Capitol Hill office yesterday, and at least two refused to leave despite warnings from police after the office was closed that they would be arrested if they remained.
"We're leaving this here for Sen. McConnell," Ted Glick, the protest's organizer and head of the U.S. Climate Emergency Council said as he proudly held up a bright red Christmas stocking. "It's a lump of coal."
Officers smiled, shook their heads and closed the door to McConnell's office to speak with Glick and his wife and fellow protester Jane Califf in private.
Glick's organization, a Washington-based non-profit group that fights global warming, blames McConnell for the Senate's failure to pass an energy bill last week that would require utilities to draw 15 percent of their energy from renewable sources by 2020 and a related $21-billion tax package. The group hastily threw together plans over the weekend to confront McConnell about his stance on funding renewable energy.
