Just in Time for Kwanzaa
So, how about a little break from all the torture testimony? How about this weird story from today’s New York Times?

James D. Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA and Nobel Prize winner, recently was quoted in a British newspaper that black Africans are not as intelligent as whites. The article in The Times of London quoted Dr. Watson as saying he was “inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa” because “all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours (whites) – whereas all the testing says not really.”

A nasty enough comment on its own, but also one that shows an astonishing degree of racism of a sort that gave a historical justification to every vile atrocity – torture, slavery, the ripping apart of families, cultural genocide, wholesale slaughter, lynching – devised in the minds of God-fearing, genetically “superior” whites.

So, imagine the surprise for Dr. Watson when an analysis of his own genome shows he has 16 times the number of genes considered to be of African origin than does the average white European. This is approximately the same amount of “African” DNA that would show up if one of Watson’s great-grandparents was a black African.

Oops.

I love irony. Especially when it involves a statement clotted with racial superiority. So, Merry Christmas, Dr. Watson. And, um, Happy Kwanzaa . . .?

A sad day for me. One of my little ferals, Willy II, got killed today in our parking lot. :-(

The girls and I are going to have him cremated and throw his ashes here where I fed them.

He was the little orange/white kitty I was trying to catch and I was getting closer and closer. His pal and I think his mother wonders where he is. I just saw her.

Ahhhhh, sometimes you just have to not get so involved.....

Thanks a lot! I came to work today and he was lying right out in the parking lot. Somebody put an orange cone by him with a note that they called animal services to come pick him up. Ferrrchrisssake.

Another cat lover and I went out and moved him, then wrapped him up and put in a legal box. I tied a blue ribbon around it :-). I'm waiting to hear from the vet to see when I can take him in to get cremated.

He was so cute.

Talk about Jesus and the devil being brothers got me thinking about other figures in mythology who might be related. Think about it; Moses and Santa both bring gifts (Santa brings toys, Moses brings stone tablets).
