When crunch time comes, and we end up sitting in crap up to our necks after the next election, discovering that, for some inexplicable reason, even having a large majority and a Democratic President, nothing is being done to defend our jobs, protect our environment, or even strongly oppose the social civil war the Repukes are fighting against us, what will the excuse be THIS time?
We can only guess. But if we insist on electing corporate friendly, "lobbyists are people too" candidates to office, yet again, simply because they put a (D) behind their names instead of an (R), well, seriously, what the fuck did we expect?
Frankly, the only thing that will heal this political divide is for the Repugnicans to finally be put in their place. To reveal to the people of this nation and the world how WRONG every single aspect of their ideology actually is, how much of it is simple opportunism and greed twisted around to mimick what they like to call "family values" when it's really about taking advantage of everything good and spewing toxic waste back into both the physical and cultural environment.
It's not going to be healed through "bipartisanship," whatever that really is. For the past several years, that seemed to mean, doing whatever the Republicans wanted. We watched so-called "Blue Dogs" and "DLC" candidates eat holes in everything we tried to do that would benefit anyone except the elite, even while they used the same talking-points and propaganda framing as those they were expected to oppose.
We need someone willing to come out swinging. Who doesn't try to horn in on their side of the culture wars, who doesn't think it's okay to give the oil industry a pass simply because it's expedient. We don't need someone who doesn't seem to realize how vicious the Republicans will be this time around, since they don't have ANYTHING positive they can play against the Democratic Candidate. It's going to be all-attack, all the time. They don't have anything else!
But if we elect someone who isn't a reformer, who isn't willing to put the screws to the people who've been putting the screws to us--with Republican AND Democratic aid, at least some of the time, it's not going to get any better. Limping along with the status quo isn't going to fix our economy, restore our image in the world, or end the culture war. We need someone willing to throw caution to the wind and try to break through the barriers that have been erected between the People and their elected representatives in D.C.
Nothing else will do. Unless someone is willing to go all the way, to rip back the shroud of deception that has hung between us and what's really been going on, that's willing to fight to show us how corrupt the Bush Administration and its enablers have been, we'll continue to limp our blood in the water and watch the sharks circle, knowing that the end is inevitable.
Business As Usual won't save us.
Only total political war will save us now. If it doesn't come, the republic will fall. One way or another.
