A Son’s Past Deeds Come Back To Bite Huckabee
http://www.newsweek.com/id/78241

As Mike Huckabee gains in the polls, the former Arkansas governor is finding that his record in office is getting more scrutiny. One issue likely to get attention is his handling of a sensitive family matter: allegations that one of his sons was involved in the hanging of a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp in 1998. The incident led to the dismissal of David Huckabee, then 17, from his job as a counselor at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Ark. It also prompted the local prosecuting attorney— bombarded with complaints generated by a national animal-rights group—to write a letter to the Arkansas state police seeking help investigating whether David and another teenager had violated state animal-cruelty laws. The state police never granted the request, and no charges were ever filed. But John Bailey, then the director of Arkansas's state police, tells NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee's chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request. Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee's Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer's intervention as improper and terminated the conversation. Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee's office and fired. "I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job," Bailey says Huckabee told him. One reason Huckabee cited was "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem," according to Bailey. "Without question, was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son," says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a "courageous" and "very solid" professional.

This is to be in the Newsweek Dec. 24th issue.

1. Sick, sick, sick. Huckabee is a fraud.

If he has a son who at 17 would hang a dog, he's got bigger problems than even I ever realized. If he tried to use his position to cover it up, that should finish him.

And good riddance. This guy is not just nuts, he's bad news, too. Much as I would like to stick the Republicans with this clown as their nominee, it's probably better if he is out of public life.

He can go on to become a TV evangelist, and make millions. Sounds like his cup of tea.

Son sounds like a lovely fellow. Also from the article: "David Huckabee did not respond to requests for comment. (In April of this year, he was arrested—and paid a fine—when he forgot to remove a loaded gun from his carry-on luggage at Little Rock airport.)

WHAT KIND OF MANIAC "FORGETS" HE HAS A LOADED GUN IN HIS CARRY-ON LUGGAGE IN THIS DAY AND AGE?

6. After He Wins the Primary could be Too Late! Way Too Close to the Presidency!
With the Repiglickin' media and Diebold behind him, Yuckabee would very likely win the election.

and we would be totally fuckabeed…

Yuckabee is dangerous. It may be worth crossing over to vote against him in the primaries.

9. I feel the same way. Let him win the GOP nomination -- and THEN go after him.
Obviously, the Owner class in this country does NOT want Huckabee to be the GOP nominee, and they'll do their best to make sure he isn't.

This is THEIR election, and they're paying handsomely to put up the candidates THEY want. What the People may want is irrelevent.

4. Animal rights activists were never going to vote for this guy anyway and
the rest of it is too complicated to be of concern to Huckabee's supporters, many of whom know of or actually honor the culture that bread Dog Fighting. This will be sold as a "badge of honor" to those folks.

5. I'm not so sure about that. I think there are a lot ov moderate Pubs
who are really sick of the underhanded hidden tricks of the Shrub crowd. If they hear hints of "fix this...it's my kid" from a candidate, they just won't vote for him. I'm very sure it will turn off any of the independants, and neither party can win without the independant vote!

up for bids here.

Hard core will regard this sort of thing as standard operating procedure.

21. Also, FYI, the same * who just bought big real estate on top of
one major fresh water aquifer in Paraguay http://www.counterpunch.org/cp10202006.html

I've heard his neighbor down there, Reverend Moon, bought about 10 times the acreage that the Bush family bought.

but there are some days I would swear it is true.

These fanatic type Republicans are, IMO, genetically corrupt. Eons ago, they would have been left on the hillside to perish.

16. This is really a telling finding. How does one help one's child by
covering up such a vicious crime? The son needed help, not protection. And what kind of governor fires a man for doing his job? What kind of Baptist minister condones carrying guns in luggage? And what kind of man in this day and age does not believe in evolution? Get rid of him now. Do not even give him a chance at election. It would be the end!!!!

"I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job," Bailey says Huckabee told him. One reason Huckabee cited was "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem," according to Bailey...

"Well, if that is the case sir, then fuck you and your pathetic excuse for a son."
