All the panelists on the show are saying the line was "humble — for Bush."

1. Pretty sad state of affairs when you have to parse and interpret

and dig and sift and get out your magic decoder ring to discern whether he was being humble or conciliatory.

That's the best he can do for "humble"? The fact that he didn't smirk as much and that he seemed subdued?

Pretty damned sad. I didn't see humility out there. Not at all. I saw subdued, and several different kinds of shell game tactics, including an effort to "bury" Iraq by trying to accentuate the domestic side - where he also has absolutely no credibility. I mean, PLEASE!!! Does ANYBODY believe "oily george" and his (and his family's) LONG and INTIMATE relationships with the world's oil barons would take ANY credible or definitive steps to wean us off oil as a nation? ANYBODY? This is his life's blood, and where his family fortune lies. He's been in bed with these people all his life. And now he's just gonna get religion somehow and turn his back on all that? Yeah... suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure. I'll believe that when I believe he'll come out and admit he stole both presidential elections, under oath in prime time, and then submit his resignation.

2. I think Bush was extremely subdued, which enabled me to be able to actually listen to him lie

Normally I hit the mute button as fast as I can. This time I only said FU a couple of times, and only half-heartedly. The man is SO toast!

I watched Olbermann and Tweety's commentary. At first what Tweety said accorded with how I saw Bush's demeanor, but inside an hour he was burbling away in his usual manner about how "confident" Bush sounded! He kept saying that -- all I could think of is Chris Matthews is as star-struck as they come when it comes to Washington politicians, and he just can't help himself. Very strange.

Stick a fork in him -- Bush is done. And dragging his party down with him. Next year 12 Democratic Senators are up for re-election, and 21 Republicans. The Repubs are running scared.

after reading your tweety star struck comment my mind went to the GUTTER about his very obvious obsession with the celeb politicians he talks to and doing 'things' for them... I feel icky. it's yourrrr fault! lol ok, maybe not, but still you started the process.

5. Heh. Tonight I thought he was downright funny after awhile

I don't watch Hardball as a general rule because Chris Matthews wears on my nerves pretty quickly. He interrupts, he shouts, and he tries to be provocative but just ends up provoking me.

Tonight I put what I was seeing together with something he said about himself awhile back: that he envies politicians their job, and he just gets positively thrilled talking to freshmen congressmen because they have all that ahead of them.

So I ended up being amused because he just began to burble about Bush's supposed "confidence". And burble.
