Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, the leader of the opposition Republicans in the Senate, has drawn his first major Democratic challenger: Andrew Horne, a lawyer and Iraq War veteran who announced Thursday that he will seek the Democratic nomination.
In a video message on his campaign Web site, Horne said that he was "running for the United States Senate because it's time for a change" and that McConnell is "more than part of the problem -- he is the problem."
"It is time to tackle the challenges facing our country instead of passing them off to our kids," Horne said, pointing to congressional inaction on issues such as health care, the federal debt and immigration.
McConnell already has aired television advertisements that promote his seniority -- he is seeking a fifth six-year term -- and his work to assist tobacco farmers and medical research facilities in his state.
