Poll question: Man sues nightclubs- Says ladies' nights are discriminatory against men
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 01:05 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
NEW YORK - Men are not discriminated against by "ladies' nights" at Manhattan nightclubs, just as people in their 20s do not suffer because some restaurants let children eat for free or have "early bird" specials for older customers, according to nightclub lawyers fighting a federal lawsuit.

Roy Den Hollander has sued clubs including Lotus and the China Club, saying he was discriminated against by ladies' nights, which offer women free or discounted admission and drinks.

Do you think "ladies' nights" are discriminatory?

3. What's he complaining about? It's mostly guys buying women drinks anyway.
He's saving money AND gets to go to a bar that's attracting larger female crowds. What a dork.

I'll bet he's ugly. and sterile. and Republican. and ugly.

2. The rest of the article said
that the reason for the practice is that it has been shown men go to bars where there are women. Ladies' nights are a way of attracting the women.

8. Maybe he's jealous 'cuz the bar can attract ladies, but he can't?
Even if he gives away drinks.

4. While we continue to be paid under 70 cents for every dollar
a man makes, on the average, this is hardly a discriminatory thing. In fact, it's one of the very few benefits, as we're routinely overcharged on things like dry cleaning.

Men need to stop squawking about this. If they don't like it, they can stop patronizing those bars and go to sports bars that don't do the practice and where they can be sure the ladies will have gone where they can get one of the few price breaks they ever get.

15. Wouldn't it be something
if he focused his "concern" on the fact that men make on average $10,000 more per year than women, or - as you also noted, the fact that we are overcharged in a multitude of other ways?

Instead, the concern is that we aren't charged either the same or more for 100% of the goods/services we consume. What a guy. :eyes:

Aside from that, I don't appreciate bars luring women in to use us as bait for male customers to have access to women who are drinking. That's creepy and predatory.

26. "creepy and predatory" is the real point...
but who am I to argue if Women want to make themselves slime-bait to save a few bucks and get drunk for free? I live in a college town where clubs are meat markets for people to hook up, and of course the more women participate, the more money the clubs make. A lot of women play the game, and some do a lot of stuff they regret the next day. It's their choice, but the whole scene is really bad juju.

28. That's how I felt about it
so unless they had a band I wanted to hear, I gave those cheap drinks a miss when I was a kid. I wasn't that nuts about stinky bars anyway, and the type of men they drew, especially on ladies' night, was a turnoff.

35. "the fact that we are overcharged in a multitude of other ways?"
Should we have laws to ensure equal prices for goods and services of equal value?

Could a private bar have a Jew night, when Jewish people could get reduced-price drinks? Or how about a white night, when whitey drinks cheap?

24. that's interesting
so establishments can't refuse service based on gender or religion or skin color, but they can offer varying degrees of service depending on those factors. I think the guy's case is incredibly dumb, but I'm not sure he doesn't have a leg to stand on. A court ruling in favor of discriminatory levels of service based on sex/race/religion would appear to open a loophole for establishments wishing to so discriminate. It's interesting, and I wonder if that's not a hidden motivation behind this suit.

12. He can always go to a "gentlemen's club"
so I don't see how ladies' nights are discriminatory when there are no comperable women's clubs. (Yes, there are events aimed at women, but these are "events" not establishments for that purpose.)

13. Even if it is discriminatory,
should we not fix all the negative things women face, i.e. domestic abuse, violence against women, unequal pay, etc., before we start working on the perks.

liberal, overweight, middle-aged, lovers of hats can have a night all to themselves, why can't ladies have a ladies' night?

25. Same guy from the 80's that did this? He still must not be getting any!
I thought he was dead, poor thing. :P I'll bet he's dead socially though. He's an ass!

A lot of women make a lot less $$ than men and isn't that why the practice started to begin with?

To get more women to come to the clubs? But in fairness to low wage earning men, I've seen half price nights for everyone.

Anyone can wear a skirt. Doesn't discriminate against gender. The issue becomes moot.

32. I see two problems here
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 10:26 PM by djohnson
First, I'm surprised there are not more women's lib types speaking out again lady's night. They were the first to say they don't care about men holding doors open for them in earlier threads. I guess they feel differently about lady's night for some reason. Maybe because money is involved?

Secondly, from a sociological perspective, this is related to a more general problem we are facing these days. Flattery is way too over-rated. People are being led to believe that it is okay to alienate some people in the name of flattering one group over another, as long as each group has an equal chance at flattery. The problem with this is that it makes people easy to control.

33. So fucking stupid.
Ladies nights are a way to entice more women into what is traditionally a male environment ("the bar") thereby enticing more men to show up in an effort to pick said women.

I think the whole scene is ridiculous, but there's no deeper sociological meaning behind this. It's about business.

And, like what some other posters said, if this guy is so concerned about gender equality I wonder how many domestic abuse shelters he volunteers at. :eyes:
