E. Howard Hunt, a central figure in the Watergate break-in that toppled former President Richard Nixon, has died in Florida at age 88, his son says.
"I will always be called a 'Watergate burglar,' even though I was never in the damn place," Hunt told the Miami Herald in 1997. "But it happened. Now I have to make the best of it."
Hunt plotted the June 1972 burglary of the Democratic headquarters with G. Gordon Liddy and recruited veterans of the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba to carry out the break-in at the Watergate hotel. He pleaded guilty to wiretapping and conspiracy charges and served 33 months in prison.
