NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Police used chemical spray and stun guns Thursday as dozens of protesters seeking to halt the demolition of 4,500 public housing units tried to force their way through an iron gate at City Hall.

One woman was sprayed with chemicals and dragged from the gates. She was taken away on a stretcher by emergency officials. Before that, the woman was seen pouring water from a bottle into her eyes and weeping.

Another woman said she was stunned by officers, and still had what appeared to be a Taser wire hanging from her shirt.

"I was just standing, trying to get into my City Council meeting," said the woman, Kim Ellis.

Arrests were made as officers tried to establish order.

Inside, a scuffle also occurred in the City Council chambers as the meeting opened. Several protesters were forced out, including a woman who was carried, and a recess was called. The room was calm once the meeting resumed.

9. There's no end to the methods of demoralization.
Trust me.

Intimidation is what most of us get all the time.

6. Yes, no more than a handful, the people inside council chambers supported it!
After all, it's not their housing (they've already been promised homes
elsewhere, since the bill would decrease NOLA public housing by 95% in
the past 10 years, so the Quislings who support tearing down their
former neighbors' homes will not be getting any access to the new units!

10. And without support from middleclass people, we are bound to fail.
Middle class liberals can't understand that we can't do it alone.

We have zilch power!

11. Unfortunately, that is a big problem in New Orleans.
Too many middle class blacks as well as whites do not see a need to support the efforts of the citizens on the lower socio economic level.
Many are aware of the massive land grab. They discuss it, denounce it, but will not make an effort to support any kind of resistance. Maybe they are afraid, too comfortable, I don't know.
They applaud the efforts of the people at City Hall, but would not want to be seen with them. The water is boiling slowly.

13. It's a "problem" everywhere, including right here in River City.
How many times have I heard "poor people should....(fill in the blank).." Yet, there is never an offer to stand with them, never support given. Just expect poor people to stand by themselves and get picked off.

That's why I no longer mourn for the fall of the muddleclass. It seems it's the only way so many can learn.

Boil, froggie, BOIL!

15. Everytime something like this happens, people assume the victim deserved it
The effect is to tell people to shut up and suffer whatever injustice befalls them. Every protester is viewed as a violent criminal. Every poor neighborhood is viewed as the birthplace of degeneracy, and everyone in it guilty of... well... anything and everything.

A cop can break into an old ladies house and shoot her down, and people assume she was a drug runner because she was black and lived in a bad neighborhood. They can enter someones house and tazer someone while they sleep, and people will act like the guy deserved it. It's disgusting.

12. Don't forget to wrap yourself in foil before you demonstrate
Edited on Fri Dec-21-07 02:01 PM by Indy Lurker
Actually I don't know if this would work, but it seems like it should. Electricity takes the path of least resistance, so as long as your less conductive than the foil, and the probes are touching the foil, it should arc through the foil and you shouldn't feel a thing.

14. The Shock Doctrine at work
Please, everybody, read Naomi Klein's book.

This is criminal, and it's happening unopposed. They want to make people fearful and subservient when they do this, they aren't trying to maintain law and order. They are trying to shut people up.
