Need some LTTE help responding to "Liberalism is a mental disorder"
This is what I'm responding to:

Not A Clever Comeback

Out of boredom, mind you, I’ve been reading some of the more liberal comments in Speak Out regarding politics. These comments, written out of emotion, ignorance or spite, truly convince me that modern liberalism truly is a mental disorder. And, I’m not writing that as some sort of attempt at a clever come back.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of reality having a liberal bias. Any other ideas? I'm kind of having writer's block this morning.

If anybody else wants to respond themselves, it is anonymous. You just need to put in an eastern CT location (Vernon, Manchester, Glastonbury, Enfield, and East Hartford are among the larger towns)

1. You could simply point out figures for support of the war
and suggest that if this dillhole believes that that percentage of people are mentally unstable, well, perhaps he's out of it himself.

15. I read this column week after week
There really has been nothing outrageous from a Democratic/progressive/liberal perspective. The only controversial thing was about a month back, somebody thanked Hugo Chavez for his oil program, which generated a bunch of responses calling Chavez a mass murderer, the most evil dictator since Atilla the Hun, and a Castro-loving Commie.

8. Why bother?
Seriously, this guy's letter is so deep in self-parody, he's really only doing damage to the GOP cause.

You can tell what the editor's think by the title they put on the letter: "Not a clever comeback". Squint, and you realize they're using this guy's own words to skewer himself.

Before you write any LTE, you always need to ask yourself "What am I attempting to accomplish?" You're not going to convince anyone who actually agrees with this bozo, so it's pointless. The best letters are usually those that involve a local topic or candidate, where you have room to convince people.

9. It is just another ad hominem very general attack.
It is a little subtle, but in fact it attacks people who are liberal, and in very vague language dismisses them as being "crazy." That's fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But that is all it is. An emotional opinion. It is not an argument based on any facts.

The author read "some of the more liberal comments . . . regarding politics." He describes them as "written out of emotion, ignorance or spite" and based on his subjective opinion of the motivation of the writers of the "liberal comments" that all of "modern liberalism" is a "mental disorder." This statement has no substance whatsoever. You could substitute the word "conservative" for the word "liberal" and the word "Free Republic" for "Speak Out" and no one would know the difference. The statement is so general as to be meaningless.

That is why you can't respond to it. There is nothing to respond to really. It is just blather -- foaming at the mouth. Just don't take it seriously. There is a lot of that kind of emotional release on DU. It's OK. Just pay it no mind.

11. Psychology Today
(I think it was) ran an lenghty article saying in essence that conservatism was a mental disorder. I used to have it bookmarked, but if you google you can probably find it, as if that would make a difference to the shades-of-gray-challenged right wing.

16. Yep
All those "liberal" bromides about loving one's enemy, praying for those who persecute you, lending expecting nothing in return. I mean, Jesus Christ*! The guy was some kind of pinko, if you ask me.

*In the interjection sense, not the person named in the gospels sense.

The reason why you have problems finding an appropriate response is that this is some really stupid and baseless comment. The person who wrote that doesn't argue by providing useful points for a discussion. His own words couldn't describe his letter better: "These comments, written out of emotion, ignorance or spite".

You can't debate that person as this person doesn't offer anything for any kind of discussion at all. The best solution would probably be to ignore that person as "trolls" are only looking for trouble, they want the attention and nothing angers them more when they get ignored.
So relax, forget the idiot and don't waste your time by getting in a discussion with him. As another poster pointed out, the title alone ('Not a Clever Comeback') is enough to make him look like an idiot.

25. "....emotion, ignorance or spite,"
And Cheney telling Daschle "go fuck yourself" on the floor of the US Senate is epitome of logic and maturity?

Refusing to be in the same room as people with whom you have political disagreements?

Taking the same actions again and again and again, but expecting different results?

28. One of the things that I learned about leadership...
...is that failure is ALWAYS a failure of leadership.

So... ...last week I was reading part 2 of 'On the psychology of military incompetence' at the link below. It looks like they found a foreign language edition online and translated it back into english. The translation is horrible but I still could get the gist of it. You could make a pretty good arguement from reading it that conservatism is a mental illness.
