I'll vote for that which I believe in! Kucinich 2008!

It is better to vote for what you want and not get it than to vote for what you don't want and get it. - Eugene Debs

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Eugene_...

Eugene V. Debs was a great labor leader at the turn of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana and lived there much of his life. He ran several times on the Socialist Party of America ticket for President, receiving 6% of the vote in 1912, as well as 913,664 votes (3.4 percent) in the 1920 election, which he ran for from jail, having been convicted under The Espionage Act of 1917.

Here's a quote from Mr. Debs:

It is better to vote for what you want and not get it than to vote for what you don't want and get it.

What did Debs mean by that?

Well, at least here at DailyKos and almost every other Democratic oriented blog I read, that would mean nominating someone who can win the general election in 2008. I suppose this is as legitimate a reason to vote for a candidate as any other, other than the possibility that the 'electable' candidate may fashion his or her campaign to whichever way the political wind happens to be blowing at the time.

Me? I'm for voting for the candidate who supports what I believe in. When I hear from candidates and their supporters that something isn't achievable, and that as such we should settle for something that is slightly less onerous that what we have currently, I shudder inwardly. I shudder because I know that most of the writers at the various blogs are well educated, thoughtful and reasonable people.

And, yet, those reasonable writers seem ready to vote for the 'electable' candidate rather than a candidate who represents what they believe in (clearly, this is not true of everyone, including supporters of candidates other than Dennis).

Here are some of the thing I believe in:

1. An end to the Iraq occupation and bringing the troops home, not redeploying them in the region.

2. Universal Health Care, not Universal Health Insurance. As I read the blogs, it's apparent that most writers support a single-payer system. There's only one candidate running who supports a single-payer system. The rest think that their non-single-payer systems will eventually get there.

3. A green economy (based on solar and wind technologies) and rebuilding our infrastructure. This is clearly the way to go, unless you really like nuclear power or coal. The infrastructure issue is not going to go away. Cities, such as Indianapolis (near where I live) have around $1 billion in infrastructure updates that need to be done now. They're building a football stadium instead.

4. A return to bilateral trade agreements, rather than the regional free-trade agreements such as NAFTA. NAFTA's been a failure for the vast majority of people in this country. The corporations have taken advantage of it to move much of our manufacturing base out of the country (not that the trend wasn't there before NAFTA, but it has accelerated because of it's provisions).

5. Securing our rights under the Constitution. There's only one Democratic candidate who voted against the Patriot Act and it's extensions. The current administration is brazenly criminal in it's disreguards to our rights under the Constitution. I want a President who will give back those ill-gotten powers to the people of this country.

You get the idea.

For me, there's a clear choice amongst all of the candidates. It's Dennis Kucinich. He supports what I support. His record of public service points toward the fact that he will work for what he believes in. I am also a born and bred Hoosier (we came up from Kentucky in the same group as Lincoln), and am proud of the various humanitarian leaders we have set forth upon this country. I'm proud that Eugene V. Debs was a Hoosier, and I'm proud to be able to say that I agree with him:

It is better to vote for what you want and not get it than to vote for what you don't want and get it.

As always, now more than ever,

Go Dennis!

2. In the Minnesota caucus, I'm voting for Dennis
In the general, I hope that the candidate is closer to the top of my list than to the bottom.

6. We will vote for Kucinich so he will become the eventual nominee
Edited on Mon Dec-24-07 02:36 PM by Peace Candidate
This is primary season and that is how it works.

This idea we must vote for Edwards to beat Hillary is an orchestrated attempt to steal Kucinich voters.

But we are not buying it, nor should anyone believe the bogus polls that leave Dennis out of the running.

IT is time for WE the People to fight the Corporate media and not believe their BS.

A small percentage of intelligent people who are paying attention are the ones that bother show up to caucus and vote in the primary- the same majority of intelligent caring people who are paying attention are Kucinich supporters- That is how we will win.

19. Well, I hate to break it to you but DU isn't much of a bump in the electorate. DK has zero chance
of either the nomination or winning. He may be on the right side of some issues but he would never get more than 15% in a national election. The vast majority of voters have never heard of him and of those who have, most of them think he's nuts.

22. The primaries are about the VOTERS picking the candidate
Edited on Mon Dec-24-07 05:44 PM by riqster
...not pre-selected candidates being positioned to create self-fulfilling prophecies. HELL-OOOooo, I can read, and I know what the conventional wisdom says.

I am sick and tired of people marginalizing the actual voters by saying such crap. "The media says....the polls say...so vote the way we tell you to".

The electorate has been emasculated by such thinking. It is time that we got the hell out of their way and let the voters decide something for a damned change. NARY A VOTE HAS BEEN CAST. LET THE VOTERS DECIDE.

And yes, I will support the eventual nominee in the general. But the primaries are about selecting a candidate and building a platform for that candidate. A vote for Kooch works for me, in both respects.

24. To be clear, I will support him in the primary here in my state (with my vote)
but I'm not under any illusions that he has a snowball's chance in hell of going past the point of being a hopeful candidate. There are times when reality and pessimism are the same...this is one of them.

25. Way to go!
That'll be the proof. IF our votes are counted, and IF we are allowed to vote in the first place.

Remember, too, we are not electing candidates per se, we are electing delegates to the convention. Kooch delegates will help to create a more liberal platform for whoever the nominee turns out to be.

He also said he'd repeal the Patriot Act.

Thanks for the great quote and keeping the flame for Debs going!
I'm tired of hearing about how my vote is being "wasted".
Politics as usual is a waste, IMO.

13. After What I Have Seen These several Years
I am more than ever sticking to my principles and voting for Kucinch.

I used to be a .... moderate, and used to believe in party over country. It's what has destroyed the party and country that has made me see that compromising principles is a dangerous game. Let politicians be politicians and voters be voters.

30. I am getting petition signed
to get Dennis on the New Mexico Democratic Caucus in Februray!
He needs to get as many delegates as possible to if he doesn't win, influence the person he will give his delegates to or planks to build the platform.
When I talk to people, many don't know who Dennis is (tahnk you MSM), whne I ask them questions and show their answers support Dennis on the issues, they sign. Only registered Democrates can sign.

While others try to emulate the Kucinich platform we know that they will not follow through. Dennis Kucinich stands by his word and believes America can be a country that promotes peace, economic integrity, and sound human rights.
