but never knew the "back story." Who was that who recorded it and how, pray tell, did he come to think it was ... whatever? Did he do it intentionally to be horrendous?

That's why the recent (for me) discovery of the video is so intriguing. If I were him, I would disclaim it to be hoax.

As for the audio, a Mike Malloy listener sent him the audio file several years ago and it has become a Christmas tradition of sorts.
