1. I'm not sure where the corruption part is
They certainly don't seem to have been a very good corporate citizen, but that's different from corruption. I'm sure there is some corruption involved, but when you're in as many different lines of business as GE is, you have over 300,000 full time employees, and you do $170 billion a year in sales, you're bound to have some blemishes on your record.

17. They made big money off Hitler.

It's no wonder GE and the Wall Street insiders who control the company are so handsomely rewarded for their "contributions" to society.

It's no coincidence that we don't read or hear much about that these days -- or the fact GE owns NBC.

3. Just a drop in the bucket. The overwhelming majority of their offenses are never
even exposed, let alone, charged. OTOH, they are pretty typical of all companies their size. That's one very good reason for breaking up these conglomerates, they are literally above the law.

4. Sounds to me like they're not entirely above the law
or they would never be found guilty of anything or ordered to pay any kinds of fines or compensation for anything.

8. As the first sentence in the reply states, this is just a drop in the bucket.
This is just "the cost of doing business" to them. Just as Ford so infamously decided to eat the lawsuits and kill a few dozen customers because it was cheaper than fixing their defective cars. Just as M$ was "fined" $70 M for illegally, and blatantly, stealing Netscape's business worth billions, it doesn't matter to them.

If you could make a billion by paying a few million, wouldn't you consider that a good deal?

That our politicians are corrupt doesn't upset me nearly so much as the fact that they are so cheaply bought.

5. On the global plantation that's called "the cost of doing business."
Every cent of that is paid by the CUSTOMER. It didn't cost Jack Welch (or any other executive) a dime.

Their next punishment should not be a mere fine, but something far greater.

12. Of course, and people have got to wake up and wonder why they're pandering to us.
There's something behind a massive reichwing corporation using its news division to cater to the left, something here is very wrong.

14. Tweety isnt a RW shill
Even though people like to paint him as one some time. Though Scarborough is RW, he has gotten a lot better over the years and is not nearly as bad as he used to be. David Shuster is also not a RW shill.

15. You set the bar pretty low
Just because a talking head criticizes a GOP'er once in a while doesn't make them fair and balanced. In fact, its a trick he's learned to allow himself a fig leaf of respectability.

Tweety has earned his stripes as a corporate mouthpiece by constantly ignoring real news that isn't favorable to Bush, repeating WH talking points without questioning them and applying the usual double standard between Dems and the GOP.

Bush and the GOP have made themselves about as popular as VD, its expected their media mouthpieces are disgusted and occasionally criticize them, but it doesn't change the fact that they're right wing shills.

16. No he just does a damn fine imitation of being a RW mouthpiece
NBC/MSNBC have pushed far more pro-GOP talking points than they have liberal ones. And I for one haven't forgotten it.

20. I agree --- I think that one possibility is that GE has a better nose for money moving to Dems ----
why else would a right-wing Nazi corp be supporting liberal content?

They might want to know whose ass they're going to have to kiss come 2008 ---

And, networks get 80% of the campaign funds raised by the candidates!!!

PLUS lucrative connections after the election!!!

But --- this is a question I've been asking for months ---
glad someone else is interested ---
and let's hope someone has a better answer!!!

19. GE was guilty of "defrauding the government" -- but still got contracts!!!
This happened way back --- like 60's or earlier . . . ?

They were actually found guilty of "defrauding the government" but were still permitted
to do business with the government!!!

I really knew nothing about GE until the 80's ....

21. GE is not the only Corp that has defrauded the US Govt.
that still gets Multi-Millions in contracts. There are many such Corps. Halliburton/KBR has been found guilty of doing so a few times & fined & is still getting $Millions from the Govt.

22. GE was the FIRST evidently --- I think this was in '48?
And for quite a long, long time they were the sole corporation guilty defrauding the gov't ---

and rather than listing additional sinners, why not ask why any of these corporation are permitted to do business with the government -- ??

Of course, they shouldn't be ---

24. And GEe . . . who was the corrupt, pro-outsourcing, pro-Bewsh bastard who RAN GE during that time?
Neutron Jack Welch, that's who!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Welch

This shitbag bastard fucker raised the bar in neo-Robber Baron ruthlessness, slashing employee numbers by the thousands while rewarding fellow executives with massive bonuses and stock options. He has not an ounce of compassion for the middle and working classes, has publicly stated that he is not concerned with the discrepancy between the salaries of top-paid CEOs and those of average workers, opposes SEC reforms regulating executive pay, is an opponent of the Sarbanes/Oxley act, and started the massive outsourcing of GE's R&D to foreign nations such as India. Many CEOs of the 80s and 90s, with an ally in the staunchly pro-corporate Reagan and Bewsh 41 admins, began to adopt Welch's agenda of rottenness.

Not only that, he was a philanderer (affair with his current wife while still married) and was in the control room of NBC during the 2000 election, DEMANDING their newscasters call the election for Bewsh.

http://makethemaccountable.com/coverup/Part_04.htm

To Welch, although George W. Bush might not be a genius, his policies would encourage those who were geniuses to be even more innovative and productive. Fewer government regulations and lower corporate taxes would create technological advancement, thereby benefiting society more than all of the do-gooder social programs combined ever could. The country would be run for the benefit of the “A” people who achieved great things, not the “C” people who merely existed. In such a laissez faire environment, the powerful would be unshackled to become even more powerful, and no corporation in the world was more powerful than General Electric.

By contrast, Welch viewed Al Gore as the candidate of the parasites. Gore voters were not the generators of wealth; they were the consumers of taxes. Welch privately described the typical Gore voter as “someone who needs all these goddamned social programs because she’s too goddamned dumb to keep her legs crossed and too goddamned lazy to get an abortion.”
