2. Am I seeing this the wrong way?
The town seems so proud to offer these people the whopping sum of $7 per hour. Is it just me, or is the subliminal message here, "They're desperate and all washed up, anyway, so they're grateful for any crumb".

Retired professionals are expected to offer their services at ridiculous "discounts". Years of education and experience apparently count for nothing.

5. The way we treat our elders has a predictive aspect for all of us,
because it's most likely the way we will be treated when it's our turn. There's no end of work to be done here. And if it doesn't get done, we're seeing our own future.

middle to lower income seniors are working at places like Wal-mart as greeters and cashier's just to make ends meet. Most of them have already had to sell their homes.
