NH Civil Unions start Jan. 1 and the state party is asking for help
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 01:20 PM by NewHampster
Letter from the NH Democratic Party asking for all of us to support Civil Unions as they become law next week.

The party asked me to not post the entire letter so here is my personal feeling.

When civil unions become legal next week the wrong wing will try to use it against all our candidates in the primary and also against Governor Lynch. We need to overwhelm them with support letters and phone calls by locals to the radio call-ins.

Hopefully, fingers crossed, they hold off until after the primary.

If you decide to send in a letter, please visit the NHDP site at
http://nhdp.org/letter_editor.asp. You will find a link to submit your
letter that is extremely easy.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

1. It is a flat-out lie to call civil unions "equal rights"
Either willful ignorance of the law, malicious implementation of Jim Crow or optimistic delusion, take your pick. Separate is inherently unequal. If it is not called "marriage," it is not marriage but something else.

2. It is but it is a step
Most great change happens by small steps in the right direction.

I know our friends are happy for what they've gotten and plan to "legalize" their love just after the first.

I want marriage, also. But civil unions are...something. Here in Illinois, we have...nothing. There's a civil unions bill languishing in the state legislature...it could very well pass. But our asshole governor...who's a Democrat...is fighting with the legislature...which is controlled by the Democrats. Don't ask me how we in this state has gotten to this point, but we have. Unfortunately, all of this stupid snapping and infighting gets in the way of the state's business...including passing and enacting a civil unions bill for the gay and lesbian couples in Illinois.

But...congratulations to the people of New Hampshire. And just because you have civil unions doesn't mean you can't stop fighting for marriage.

4. Jim Crow was a step too
Edited on Thu Dec-27-07 01:34 PM by TechBear_Seattle
That doesn't mean it was a reason to rejoice.

Added: I am not really saying that civil unions are not a good thing. However, I get very, very angry when I hear people spouting lies about how civil unions are equal to actual marriage. They are not, and never will be. Our system of jurisprudence and common law guarantees that no statutory change can ever grant the many rights, protections, responsibilities and priviledges of marriage that exist because of previous court rulings.

7. I think it's worth noting that all of New England except Rhode Island...
I think it's worth noting that all of New England
except Rhode Island offers some sort of union:

o VT: The first civil unions
o NH: Civil unions starting in a few days
o ME: Civil unions
o CT: Civil unions
o MA: Full civil marriage

And progress also extends as far as New Jersey, but
not yet New York.
