Hindus, Christians Clash Again in India

By GAVIN RABINOWITZ – 4 hours ago

NEW DELHI (AP) — Hindu extremists attacked village churches and burned down the home of a prominent Christian politician Thursday, officials said.

Gangs of Hindus and Christians defied a curfew imposed following two days of attacks by Hindu hard-liners. Local police have been unsuccessful in halting the attacks and the federal government announced it was sending in a paramilitary force.

A mob of Hindus torched the house of Radhakant Nayak, a member of the Indian parliament's upper house and a Christian leader in the area, Nayak told the CNN-IBN news channel.

Superintendent of Police Narsingh Bhol said several churches and prayer houses were ransacked in the Kandhamal district of Orissa state area and some were set on fire. He could not give an exact number.

Organized, heirarchical religion - alas - is very often the antithesis of Spirit.

3. Maybe, in this case, it's organized something else?
Not that I have much use for organized religion, but it just seems odd that someone would stir the shit up in India right at the same time that Pakistan slips a little further into chaos. Suppose the internal chaos increases in both, then it becomes chaos between the two.

As in two nuclear powers, pissed off at each other?

In a region where "certain interests" would just love to start World War III?

This might go a lot deeper than Christian vs Hindu vs Muslim.

2. Weren't people defending this idiotic religion just a little while ago?
I could have sworn that the last little f-dance concerning religion got all caught up in the... well... Hinduism is okay. But it isn't, you know. No religion is okay. They're all inherently opposed to the dignity of the species and planet.

5. Hindus are just as intolerant as the next fundie
In many rural areas, converting from Hinduism to anything else will still get you killed...
