That's the actual headline. Makes me want to say "Hey, I recognize you folks. You are my neighbors, my sisters, my brothers, my friends, my colleagues, and yes, sometimes the jerks who cut me off in traffic and get the last good donut in line in front of me. Who knows, maybe you are my children (too early to tell).
I guess the idea of "recognizing" gay couples strikes me as meaning something deeper than any one law (as important as it is). Recognizing means looking at someone and seeing a part of yourself, a part of us all.
I support equal marriage opportunity for any two consenting adults. Civil unions may be a compromise, or maybe it's an interim step in the right direction. But the most important step may be the recognition of shared humanity, shared dreams, shared fears, and ultimately a shared destiny as world citizens.
Stepping off the soap box now.
Happy new year.
