No major announcement. And no, I'm not leaving. Just a temporary leave of absence due to residence issues. Nothing at all to do with any disagreements here or otherwise.
A coyote has a tough hide.
No the reason I'm taking a spell off is several fold.
1. As a contractor and handy man i haven't had a call or a job for three weeks. There are no jobs planned ahead of me and my major client is slow.
2. My room mate has been unable to contribute to the rental share even 10% of the costs associated with maintenance of the premise for the entire year of 2007. Either she refuses to find work or can't. She does not drive and appears to have no limiting handicap to prevent her from working. She just won't find a job nor contribute when she does have any money.
3. The gas and electric bill, Com cast internet cable etc are all due today. The rent will be due New Years Day. I am choosing to pay none of the above.
I refuse to evict someone in the cold of winter. Not even my wastrel of a room mate I've helped with food, lodging, entertainment and free rides. So she will likely be thrown out by the "good Republican landlords" sometime within the next month. They excel at those things.
I don't.
The dogs and i will leave the middle class comfort of the suburbs for a while. We've survived being "vehicularly housed" before. 1999 through 2002. Except that I only had one dog then. Besides, "we" do own an acreage parcel down in the Southern California desert. True fact. Forty acres undeveloped. Somewhere outside of Borrego Springs. Glad I hung on to it over the years. Bought it for 16 grand in 1986. A bargain.
Unfortunately I will need to save up a bit of money prior to going down there for good. Shouldn't take too long. After all, i won't have a parasitical room mate or landlord exploiting me any longer.
Meanwhile it could be a little cramped within the confines of the 17 year old Isuzu Trooper. It just turned 199 thousand miles. I call her "Sally". And quite literally she IS a trooper.
All of us are survivors.
Wiley's prediction: The next election will be about immigration. Legal or otherwise. I truly doubt that any candidate will actually DO ANYTHING about the matter once elected. They'll just campaign hard on the matter. It is a "sacred cow" issue. As in the words of the Late Edward Abbey (friend of mine).
"Conservatives love their cheap labor and the Liberals love their cheap cause. None of them would actually invite immigrants to live their own homes. Not into their homes!" (Loosely quoted)
From "Immigration And liberal Taboos" Edward Abbey. Published in "Beyond the Wall"
True fact Ed, RIP March 14, 1989.
So Rickey, Barney (the other two dogs) and myself will be living out of our car for a bit. I expect to find a shower at a local homeless shelter if need be. Last time i went through this i owned a bus. A little too large to park but more room. Put in my own fiberglass tub. Saved water. Could take a shower with only 2 & 1/2 gallons of water!
It really doesn't take much to survive if you put your mind to it. Main things are shelter from cold, potable water and food. Both for me and the dogs. We'll do fine. I'm actually looking forward to it.
Regular life in the "burbs" has it's derelictions:
A. The nasty landlords always lurking in the shadows. Living through the extortion of other humans. Their place in hell assured.
B. Nosy neighbors who party until 3am. Get pissed if i don't mow the lawn every week. And the mindlessness of suburban life in general.
Never-the-less it was comfortable here. Even with the outrageous expense of everything and my loafing room mate. We COULD have pulled it off if she'd just tried to find a JOB!. Actually i wouldn't even have minded supporting my room mate if my earnings hadn't gone down the crapper over the past ten years or so. She's not a bad person. A little self indulgent and overly emotional but in many ways a really nice person.
She just refuses to work or even find employment.
Back when starting out in business for myself some twenty plus years ago I could make $200 bucks a day EASY. So i worked three to four days a week. Sometimes more. Didn't even know what the hell i was doing back then! Not compared to now as I'm multi trade fluent, have better communication skills and know just about everything about construction. Despite that, twenty years ago I always paid my rent on time, put my second wife through college and made the payments on both my truck and her car. My first kids were born then. Good thing.
Today? Last time i checked the undocumented workers were willing to do my skilled work for fifteen bucks an hour. Maybe even just ten.
As for me and the dogs?
We're free.
So I'll be seeing ya. Not much but some.
Probably check in once in a while to say hello here while visiting the local libraries. If someone can advise me how to retrieve my password in the future I'd be much obliged. If not will just start a new screen name or something.
