WASHINGTON - Dietary supplements marketed to provide male sexual enhancement contain undeclared erectile dysfunction drugs putting users at risk, the Food and Drug Administration warned Friday.

The agency advised consumers to stay away from Shangai Chaojimengnan supplements sold under the names Super Shangai, Strong Testis, Shangai Ultra, Shangai Ultra X, Lady Shangai and Shangai Regular. The Chinese-made supplements are packaged and distributed by Shangai Distributor Inc. of Puerto Rico.

Product testing indicates that some of these so-called supplements contain Viagra's active ingredient, sildenafil, or a compound with a chemical structure that mimics sildenafil.

These chemicals could interact with nitrates in drugs taken for disorders commonly associated with erectile dysfunction, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease. The result could dangerously lower a user's blood pressure, according to the FDA.

China doesn't have strict regulations on what goes into their limp willie drugs. They used to use powdered rhino horn to the point rhinos were seriously endangered, still are. Since Africans have finally started to protect their own resources against poachers, that particular ingredient is nearly impossible to come by and exceedingly expensive.

You bet there's an outfit in China that's managed to produce sildenafil. It's not complicated, although it's a little more sophisticated than a bathtub drug like meth. You can also bet that herbalists have used it in place of the rhino horn they can no longer afford.

If you have a strong family history for heart disease, if you are a smoker, or if you're on any blood pressure medication at all, avoid this stuff completely. It could save your life. It will certainly save the embarrassment of having a group of nurses scrape your carcass off the emergency room floor when you bottom out your blood pressure.
