Ex-pastor sent to prison after claiming abuse victim harassed him

A retired pastor from Canada was sentenced to three years in prison today after telling a McHenry County judge he was sexually harassed by the 4-year-old Lake in the Hills girl he pleaded guilty to molesting.

Kenneth R. Cooke, 73, appeared to have reasonable chance at a probation sentence given his age, health problems and lack of criminal history heading into his sentencing hearing this afternoon.

But the Calgary man who once headed his own ministry likely blew his chance of avoiding prison when he took the witness stand and painted his pre-school age victim as a sexual aggressor.

"On a couple of occasions I felt I was sexually harassed," Cooke said. "I think there is psychological evidence that children even in their younger years can become interested in sex."

I remember when I was a teenager, we kids found out where there was a holy roller meeting being held out in the country. We found the place and peeked in the windows. The people, and I knew most of them, were shouting and jumping up and down with hands raised in the air and a neighbor lady was rolling all over the floor like a crazy person.

It left quite an impression on me and I never felt the same way about religion, again.

You will notice that the "social conservatives," also known as wingnuts, put most of their energy into issues involving sex and reproduction: abortion, gay marriage, abstinence education, condom distribution, stem cells, and on and on. Jesus himself talked mostly about helping the poor and afflicted, not a crippling fear of sex (and women). I see it as a form of self-imposed mental illness.

Instead of seeing himself as a deeply disturbed individual who committed an act that caused great harm to a child, he instead is trying to spin the story that he is a victim of sorts. Of course one of the major problems with that is that his victim is four years old. As far as I am aware, four year olds are not sexually active in the least.

But, I'll go out on a very long limb here and grant the pastor his yarn. Even if we do agree with his assessment, there's still a very big problem - he's an adult, and simply should of known that it was wrong and stopped it.
