Poll question: Would you consider gong to Times Square on New Year's Eve?

Given the state of our society these days, would you consider an evening spent locked in a pen in a street where the manhole covers have been welded into place and every third person is a secret agent of one sort or another, all to watch a bunch of Swarovski crystal get lowered down a pole by two burley guys operating a rope winch?

We were in New York last August...stayed at the Millenium Plaza on 44th street...right next to the world's largest Toys 'R Us and a great place to see the ball drop. My bets are you'd have to book a year in advance for reservations.

There's no place like Times Square...the street vendors, the fun people and the excitement of the city.

17. I did it once when I lived in the NYC area....

Shoulder-to-shoulder people, no place to move, half-hour wait to use the bathroom, windchill of -10 that New Year's Eve, drunken disorderlies everywhere and three people threw up on the Metro-North train ride back up to New Rochelle.

Once was quite enough. I'd rather spend the night in a club or at a party well away from the cheesy tourist hell of Times Square anyway.

Actually, we got stuck in a similar circumstance at the Eiffel Tower a few years ago. There was a strike and the police had these pens set up and lots of armed guys in Camos. We were a little put off because we had NO idea what was going on. In about 10 minutes, all was again seemingly okay and we were allowed up the tower. They just kept channeling people through the pens.

The elevator wasn't working, and it seemed as though people were stampeding around despite the crush of the mob. The floor vibrated and I felt like we were all going to fall. Eh, wotta rush. :P

The party we used to have when I lived on W 69th St was a huge parade with Father Time leading the charge from Central Park South up to the Bandshell and the baby New Year kills him off. The city hired 3 or 4 local bands and hundreds of buskers and street performers for dancing and entertainment. Food carts were there, too.

Cops were very cool back then, and looked the other way from wine bottles and hash pipes unless you were an asshole. "Busted for being an asshole" never went on the police report, but it was the main way to get busted.

Seriously, I gave it moment's consideration this year. I live in the NYC area and my dad passed away this year. He was a Holocaust survivor and he came to NY in December 1949. One of the first things he did was go to Times Square for New Year's Eve. A new beginning. But then I decided that I couldn't be stuck in a pen ( of course in 1949 they didn't pen the revelers).

Couldn't see a thing, couldn't get through the crowd, couldn't find a bar nearby that wasn't hosting a private party. When we finally found a bar, we ended up drinking martinis because they were all out of champagne. Not worth it at all--leave it to the tourists. x(

then hell yeah I'd go! I went to a similar event in Vegas for New Years and it was a blast! A huge street party!
I also went to 'First Night' in 'Beantown' and took along my 7 yr. old (at the time) and we had a great time! :D

Nothing about it was ever appealing, knowing that available bathrooms were nearly impossible to find, and that the best you could hope for was NOT to have your pocket picked, your toes trod on, or your clothing vomited on. And oh yeah, MOST New Year's Eves, it was f'in FREEZING!

Exceptions exist, but mostly it's a tourist and suburban kiddie thing.

because of more mundane reasons: I have a fear of crowds, I'm too far away, I have no money, I'm unable to stay standing for more than a couple of minutes, and I have a sensitivity to the cold. So, no, I won't be in Times Square with a crushing number of people surrounding me.

If I had my druthers, I'd be in Zion National Park, having just eaten a wonderful meal in the Lodge restaurant, staring up at the canyon walls, and then retreating back into the warm cabin to go peacefully to sleep. :)

69. Been there, done that. I was in the Army, on leave with friends.

We ended up in Times Square. At one point in the night I was hoisted up on a friend's shoulders. The cops didin't like that and pulled me down. They didn't arrest me, that was good.

The next day I was at Radio City Music Hall, got in free, didn't have to stand in line. I decided to call home. I called mom and dad. I asked them to guess where I was. There was a long pause and dad said, New York. I asked him how he knew. He said he saw me on TV being pulled to the ground by some cops. I was busted big time.

A up side to this was the call ended up being free.

After the call I went to a coke machine, put in my money, got my coke and several dollars change.

My whole trip worked out that way. We even got a free trip to the Statue of Liberty and a free meal courtesy of some nice looking WACS.
