Start showing America at her best — healing, rebuilding and using our vast resources to alleviate the widespread suffering in the Muslim world. Remember that the eagle on the Great Seal of the United States holds an olive branch as well as arrows.
By now we should realize that our enemies are not only formidable fighters (remember that they once defeated the Soviet Union), they also are masterful manipulators of public opinion. Bin Laden and his ilk have brilliantly and deviously brainwashed millions of Muslims into believing that the United States and its Western allies have declared war on Islam. Lest you marvel that any intelligent person could believe such nonsense, consider that we have made their job easy.
Remember the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq? It was our single biggest propaganda loss of the war. Abuse, torture, sexual degradation. ... What further proof was needed of U.S. hostility toward Islam? I can just hear our critics now.
Why is it, then, that we're still fudging on the issue of torture? Would anybody dispute that pouring water down a person's nose and throat to make him think he was drowning was torture if it were Iranians doing this to a U.S. soldier? Why, then, are we surprised that Muslims howl when it's used by Americans?
