There were two Obama supporters at the last Dem breakfast I went to

A group of local Dems meets once a month to network and such. We are active politically, some are officers in the local Dem Party. Most can be depended upon to organize, canvas, phonebank, lit drop, and the like each election time.

So I'm talking to the two Obama supporters, and asking them about the incident with the ex-gay preacher/singer Donnie McClurkin going around with Obama's gospel tour in the South. Maddenly, I can't get a normal person's perspective out of them, only "It won't hurt him in the long run".

You see, I wasn't trying to ask about political strategy or the long term effects. I was trying to ask them what they thought, as people, about the fact that Obama had this person making appearances for him. Twice I got the "it won't hurt him politically" response, and then a tepid "I suppose it's not a great thing, but I don't agree 100% with any candidate" response.

I have gay friends who will never consider voting for Obama until he apologizes for having McClurkin on his tour.

And I'm going to feel like such a fucking hypocrite if I ultimately have to campaign for the man because he's our nominee. It's something I think I will have to hide from my friends. Not a hard thing to do, mind you, as they are internet friends mostly.

As a consequence, I'm not feeling too good tonight. Fuck, what am I going to do. I don't want to betray my friends, but I also will feel obligated, knowing me, to support the nominee, whoever it is.

Sigh.
