"An Inconvenient Truth" Director: "I was 100% sure we WEREN'T going to get nominated"

"I was 100 percent certain we weren't going to get nominated," said "An Inconvenient Truth" director Davis Guggenheim, whose film picked up two Oscar nominations Tuesday, for best documentary and best song. Despite stellar reviews and big boxoffice, he noted that the Paramount Vantage film missed key nominations, including the DGA, "so I didn't think the documentary branch would go for it."

Then again, Guggenheim on Tuesday pointed to "a series of small miracles" that began even before his feature's Sundance Film Festival world premiere a year ago.

—snipped—

Soon, the film seemed to take on a life of its own. "It was really like a wildfire," Guggenheim said. "My father-in-law called me one day and said, 'Fifty churches in Maine are showing your film tonight.' "

Al Gore came to Sundance last year to promote the film, and he might just show up on Oscar night. "I had a nice talk with Al. I said. 'Are you ready to go to the show?' He said, 'I'll think about it,' " Guggenheim said, laughing.

1. They deserve the nomination and the win......

As much as I would have liked to have been nominated myself, I can not fault the choices the doc branch made. As cliche as it sounds, it really was an incredible honor just to make the documentary shortlist. All of the films on there are very good. This is a strong year for documentaries.

If you havent seen Iraq in Fragments, Deliver us From Evil, Jesus Camp, or My Country, My Country. They are all great films. In particlular, Iraq in Fragments is an amazing movie. If Inconvenient Truth has any real competition, that is it.

Also, keep your eye out for the DVD release of Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?. Now that we are past all the Academy Rules, we can start promoting our movie in creative grassroots ways.

7. It is a lonely and thankless task most of the time.
You have to really believe in the message you are presenting to be able to deal with the struggle you face every day just to get people to pay attention.

We have a new project focused on New Orleans post Katrina. If it gets going, I will let you know.

9. Thank you, it was a thrill for us.
Now I hope that we have raised teh profile of the film enough to get more people to actually watch it.

It plays on PBS on February 27th, so check your local listings. Some stations may delay the broadcast to later that week.

2. subject matter aside, it was a very well done documentary
The information in it was so shocking and fascinating that it wasn't until I watched it for a second time that I was able to appreciate how well made it was...if that makes any sense.

13. The documentary Oscar has been notorious for messing up
but this new system seems to be doing a fairly good job. I have only seen Inconvenient Truth and parts of Jesus Camp. I really do hope Gore's film wins though he isn't a producer nor director so no Oscar for him.
