Jon Stewart Goes After Jonah Goldberg and 'Fascism'

By E&P Staff

Published: January 16, 2008 12:15 AM ET

NEW YORK Columnist Jonah Goldberg stopped by Comedy Central's "Daily Show" on Wednesday night to tout his provocative new book, "Liberal Fascism." Jon Stewart clearly didn't buy the premise, asking at one point in exasperation, "Organic food is fascist???" and "I must say you totally misrepresent what progressive means."

Apparently the taping went on so long, and with so many nuggets, that (as Stewart had warned) some of it had to be aired in choppy sound bites.

Most touchy moment for Jonah came when Stewart asked him if one of the things he was against was people throwing around the charge "fascism" far too easily. Jonah said yes, then Stewart picked up a copy of the book and simply pointed to the title, "Liberal Fascism" -- adding, so why are you doing this?

Goldberg got angry at one point and accused Stewart of not reading his book.

1. I wish they would show the whole thing.
My head was about to explode last night watching that.

4. I'm with you...the entire 18 minute interview would have been better
The rest of last night's show was pretty week. Using the entire 18 minutes would have been a much better use of the time. I, too, wanted to hear more of that stupid punk. He's one of the very worst in the business.

2. Another whiny little bitch wingnut gets called on the carpet
and pisses himself stupid when asked honest questions about the drivel he's cramming down readers' throats. On the Daily Show, no less.

7. Of course, he got his good PR this morning on MSNBC
Joe Scab fawned over him and gave his book plenty of plugs. Jonah knew he'd be skewered by John, but any PR is good PR, and I'm sure it still resulted in some sales of his hard-bound toilet paper.

5. Is There A Full, Unedited Version Out There Yet???
Stewart said that the entire interview ran 18 minutes. From the 6 minutes they showed, Stewart just destroyed this oxygen thief.

One of the most interesting parts was when Jonah the Whale claimed HE was a "liberal" and that the current "libruls" co-oped the name, thus his up is down, down is sideways logic. It was truly mind-boggling. Even Stewart was getting punch-drunk from knocking this shit stick around.

17. He said "classical liberal" - which means neocon
Very shady use of language to confuse the general audience.

"Classical liberalism is not to be confused with the ideology that is commonly called "liberalism" today in the United States, as "classical liberalism" is actually closer to being a tendency of "conservatism" in the U.S."

6. Goldberg's problem was that
Steward had read the book.

This is a Coulter type title, what's she up to these days? I wonder if the financiers of these books will run out of money eventually.

:woohoo: for taking to propaganda B.S. about liberals and progressives. Stewart sliced, diced, and served Goldberg's method up with a garnish of parsley.

edited for typo

18. That was priceless--a glance at Lucianne's dearest one, then to the audience as he casually
lifted up the book to the camera.

Mr. B@L almost fell out of his chair he was laughing so hard.

10. Back in the Counter Culture, his audience wouldn't uniformly applaud rightists on cue
That's something that troubles me about Daily Show. Ever notice that? They'll have some fuck on whose clearly against open, democratic society, or has played a role in subverting it, and when they come on, all the automatons applaud madly on cue like a bunch of clueless twits.

You think to yourself, "Wow, you morons are actually applauding someone who has worked to fuck you over royally. Congratulations, and no wonder we're where we're at..."

It would be nice to see at least slivers of INFORMED people protest that shit occasionally.

14. It Was Ok.
It would have been a whole lot better if Jon knew or could more accurately relay a definition of fascism. I think he was trying to with his comments on commercials and the "ticker" but he came up a bit short. I'd also like to see the full interview.

16. "YOU DIDN'T READ MY BOOK, DID YOU??"
He threw this exact same charge at Thom Hartmann a couple of days ago when he tried to interview him as well!!!

Oh, one absolutely HIGH-LARIOUS post script to this appearance - earlier in last night's TDS episode, one of the breaks contained a commercial for...wait for it...

CHEETOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
