26. What got me was the "anyone can get rich" bit.

I am glad that Mutombo is doing such good things with the (excessive) money he makes as a bb star. (more on athletes making too much later in another thread). What got me were a couple things. First the bit where he came to the USA to get educated as a doctor but instead, being tall and black, heh heh heh, the coach took 1 look at him and said "you play bb!" smirk, giggle, wink wink wink. This seemed insulting to me.

Secondly was the implication that anyone can do well, so long as they really try. I mean look at these people. A woman making movies in her basement when her child was young and an African man who wanted to be a doctor but was lucky enough to be tall and could make lots of money playing pro b.b. So, the only reason I am in the state I am in is because I haven't applied myself.

Much kudos to Mr. Mutombo for figuring out that making loads of money was a good thing because of what he could, and has done, with it. Very good and many thanks. Bah to Mr.bush for his giggles, his insinuations, his general smarminess.

I did not know that, however, my point was not about that. It was about what he might have accomplished as a doctor, not just a donor. I'm not against basketball, him playing basketball or anything he has personally done. It was just a random observation. The world could use dedicated doctors. As he is a humanitarian, I wonder what he could have done as a medically trained doctor to help people.



Edited to add: I try to be very straightforward in my posts. I wasn't hinting at anything in particular. There is just such a need for doctors, especially those with the calling to be humanitarians. Doctors Without Boardres could always use more trained medical experts!

It's really that simple. When I first wrote it, I did not know he had donated the funds to build a hospital. * might have said it last night, but I was not paying full attention to his speech to begin with. I know it now. I'm not that into basketball, so I don't know much about the players. Really, it's that simple.



Now, if you really want to get into a debatable subject: I wonder who staffs this hospital. I'm sure it is out of his hands as he is a donor for the construction. If the company that staffs it is honest, then it will be great. If they are anything like the set-up explored in The Constant Gardner, that would be frightening. But this discussion is a totally different thread for a different day. ;)

Both of these people have done very good deeds. To villify both of them just because they were recognized at the SOTU is just being petty and ridiculous. President Clinton also recognized notable Americans at his SOTUs. This tradition was started by Ronald Reagan (I think) and I think its a good one.

I'm very curious as to why you just singled out these two: what about the subway hero or the soldier from Kentucky? Are they somehow less deserving of praise because Chimpy recognized them???

If we take your already irrational rant out a bit, go back to 1985. Ronald Reagan awarded the Medal of Freedom to Clara Hale. Mrs. Hale was an African-American social worker who served some of the poorest neighborhoods in NYC. She opened Hale House in Harlem, which cared for crack babies at a time when no one cared to. Hale House served over 1,000 of these infants and helped many of their mothers get treatment. Gee, since a Republican president chose to honor her she must have been a real "skank".
