Welcome Truthseekers to the Tuesday edition of the program. It appears nobody was particularly thrilled with Man-or-Monkey's (final?) State of the Union Speech last night. Here are some quips that characterized the speech:

From CNN: "Before the speech, White House officials set low expectations -- and Bush met them. This is a president who had previously used this same stage of a packed House chamber to dramatically talk about an "axis of evil" to build the case for war in Iraq or to launch massive domestic initiatives like Social Security reform. But this time he offered little that was new or bold."

The Chicago Tribune offered this: "In his final State of the Union speech, President Bush on Monday tried to accomplish a simple goal: to get a tuned-out America to listen to him about fundamental issues of war, peace and a troubled economy. A lame duck skirting the edges of relevance in his last year in office, Bush angled to get the country's attention via the pocketbook."

From the San Francisco Chronicle: "President Bush delivered his final State of the Union address Monday night to a nation already eagerly searching for his successor. Facing a worst-of-all-worlds combination of war and a possible recession, Bush did not embrace any of the high-risk policy gambles, such as Iraq, immigration, Social Security and other ventures, that have defined his presidency. He instead sketched a narrow path of small-scale skirmishes with Congress on spending, deadlock with Democrats on Iraq policy and fervent hope that his signature tax cuts do not vanish with his presidency."

The LA Times had this to say: "Relaxed, confident and unapologetic, President Bush delivered his seventh and likely final State of the Union address . . . was a reflection of the state of his presidency at the beginning of its final year: a short-term scramble for a long-term legacy."

From the Washington Post, "Rather than review a troubled record, President Bush aims for some last-year achievements. There were no major new initiatives. Still, the president's advisers said he had decided to offer a forward-looking program, not a reflective valedictory -- a wise choice, because an honest assessment of the past seven years would have been a tale of opportunities lost and enterprises bungled."

From the Associated Press: "President Bush, standing before Congress one last time, urged the nation Monday night to persevere against gnawing fears of recession and stay patient with the long, grinding war in Iraq. He pressed Congress to quickly pass a plan to rescue the economy."

From Reuters: "President George W. Bush sought to calm Americans' fears about the economy on Monday while charting a course he hopes will keep him relevant in his final year in office."

And finally, a tongue-in-cheek editorial in today's New York Times offered this time-stamped analysis: "9:06: The President arrives, fashionably late, and fashionably attired in a blue tie the exact shade of America’s current malaise . . . 9:29: 'I call on Congress to ban unethical practices such as the buying, selling, patenting, or cloning of human life.' Human-animal hybrids, here we — He’s just moved on to “matters of justice.” Matters of justice!? How about the injustice of not discussing human-animal hybrids?! But in a way, we’re almost glad President Bush didn’t discuss human-animal hybrids in this year’s State of the Union. Perhaps he understood that, with only one year left, they’re simply too big for him to take on . . . . We look forward to next year, when the State of the Union is delivered by someone else."

Couldn't agree more.
