He would always tell me of how much he loved being from Iowa and how much he enjoyed his childhood there.

I think the movement towards progressive values is a natural result of maturity ... when the aging person is not afflicted with fear. Fear is what drives most people towards conservatism, it seems. Let us be fearless together.

28. I do not know about fear

but while I was active duty it was sure easy to be somewhat conservative.

Many things a civilian has to deal with (health care, housing etc) were not as big an issue (course those were the years 1973 - 1990).

But let me tell you when I got out, oh brother did my eyes open.

Nuts I have just started to have a decent amount of pay (along with my wonderful bride) to do well.

Note: well does not equal rich (less than 75K combined) but enough to live comfortably at least the way I define it, which is en ought to pay my bills and go to ball game once in a while.

14. Know why that's not true anymore?

A generation + ago, as we aged, MOST of us got more confortable, and a lot of people thought that the republicans would help them maintain their "wealth & prosperity"... but since the '80's people usually LOSE ground as they age...

We regained that sharp edge , because we end up fighting for every scrap our whole lives, instead of just when we're young & hungry..

Conservatism lost its small appeal to me when I got out of the USN and saw what it really means to have to scrape by for a living.

Took over 10 years to get into a good situation.

Conservative economics my rosy red A%$!

It will get better though (after the next 9 or so months) of that I am quite sure.

I do not think I will live to see a GOP president for a very long (since I am only 53 I imagine I will probably see one eventually but it will be quite a while, and when it does happen it will not look anything like what the GOP leadership of the last 30 years has been like).

16. Depends on your definition of "conservative"

For instance, I no longer jump off a 3 foot wall, trusting to my young legs to catch me, but conservatively look, measure, then clamber down.

I find I am more tolerant of differences, having learned that there are many ways to the same end and what really counts is the intent along with my basic rules of don't hurt people, don't hurt things. The rest is window dressing.

That said, I find I am less tolerant of bullshit and people who do hurt people and things.

So, it depends on your definition of "conservative", the term having been co-opted by the fundamentalist republicanites in a wrong manner.

When I was in high school, I was a conservative (or I thought I was.) The Vietnam war cured that. But in some ways, I retained that conservatism, as in adhering to principle, (when it's rational,) withholding judgment, and not acting rashly.

Being a conservative requires belief in utter nonsense, like "Tax Cuts Always Raise Revenues!" and "Government is not the solution, government is the problem."

It also requires reading the editorial wankery of Forbes and the WSJ, and imagining that all those uppity coloreds and womenfolk will learn to know their place if you just remind them of it now and again.

I couldn't do that for long. No sensible person can.

never thought the Bush tax cuts were a good idea, government is the solution to some problems simply because their is no other mechanism to solve some problems due to their sheer size.

Nuts I love my wife she is my equal not my slave, what sheer lunacy to mistreat your wife.
