On the Beach, 1959 movie about the aftermath of nuclear war,
will be on Turner Classic Movies tonight at 8 pm eastern time. This is one well worth watching. A remake was done in the 90's but paled in comparison to the original.

31. And these days, you and I recognize those views of the city.
I had a deja vu when I looked in one direction from Coit Tower... it was just like one of the periscope shots from that film.

20. I haven't seen the movie. The novel, which I read back in the 'sixties,

wonderfully written, has always haunted the back of my mind - and often comes to me to accompany the sound of constantly falling rain (ed. but then I may also be thinking of 'In the Wet', there).

my own mortality.

8. Nevil Shute.. Love his work.. That movie's still the best
Nuke-movie.. although it's dated.. younger people will not "get" a lot of it..especially the denouement moment:cry:

In case you missed it.. please read "A Town Like Alice" too :)

18. Oh, wow--A Town Like Alice. Boy, I loved that one!
The book was better than the series, but my gosh, how compelling that was. I recall at the time, the Luke/Laura storyline was capturing viewers by the kazillions to "General Hospital." While people were all entranced about Luke and Laura's fate, I was declaring loudly, "Who cares about Luke and Laura! What about Joe and Jean??" I later bought the video of "Town", watched it several times and of course still have it but no longer have a working VCR. Maybe it's out on DVD. That'd be good--it's a story that never fails to cheer me, a tribute to the human spirit and love and courage. Thanks for evoking some great memories!

On the Beach is great, too. The ending is especially poignant and ironic, even today!

9. I saw that movie in 5th grade when it came out.
I went into a depression for weeks, feeling that there was no point to anything since we were all going to die. I read the book as an adult and found it powerful. I always associate the song "Waltzing Matilda" with Gregory Peck and that movie.

We could either scare the shit out of them or bore them into blind compliance.

Are you the guy in the cap or the one with the pointy head?

15. I read the book before I saw the movie on TV
That was when I was in CA back in 63. Visiting aunt and uncle for some of the summer and borrowed from my same-age cousin. It had been on his English class reading list for 9th grade, along with Gentleman's Agreement (another Peck film I think) and 1984.
Meanwhile, back here, we were still in our "readers" er, diapers.

21. I dunno, I liked the remake a lot.
HEAVY on psychological issues of impending and unavoidable death. The Captain Tower's prayer on the foredeck of the CHARLESTON was damned good if you ask me.

29. I read the book for a book report in 8th grade
I did every book report that semester on a book about life during and after a nuclear war. I think my teacher found it a little disturbing.
