in the WH. Libby was chatting up Judy Miller about Wilson and his wife weeks before Wilson's July 6 op ed appeared. That was a June 23 meeting that both Libby & Miller "forgot" to mention in their grand jury testimony. Fitz had to "encourage" Judy to refresh her memory whereupon she "discovered" notes of the June 23 meeting with Libby and provided more testimony to the Grand Jury.
Recall Joe Wilson in his book noted he was told by his sources that when Rove found out what they'd done was illegal due to Plame's status, he was furious and told Libby that wasn't going to take the rap for them (Libby/Cheney).
No doubt Rover threw Libby/Cheney under the bus to Fitzgerald to save himself. But Libby as "scapegoat" doesn't fly, given the evidence that the instigation and the Plame info for the attacks on Wilson came out of the OVP.
As for the now revealed (by Libby's lawyer) Cheney note where he says "not going to sacrifice the guy who was asked to put his neck in the meat grinder," who "asked" Libby to do what he did? Who did Libby say gave him instructions and told Libby to reveal classified info (supposedly only the NIE info) to Judy Miller on July 8? Cheney, of course.
Libby evidently is playing the fall guy for Cheney. Perhaps figuring that he can get a pardon, but as more info comes out I wouldn't count on it.
Libby's throwing more smoke, but it doesn't obscure the fact that he lied to the feds and the grand jury, which is what he's charged with.
