I would like to draw your attention to another post, if I may....
I know not many people visit the DU Marketplace forum unless they are drawn there by seeing the post on the "Latest" page, so I would like to draw your attention to my Tribute to Fallen Soldiers post over there.

A little back ground: I had to close my restaurant at the end of the year due to financial & health reasons. I'm currently waiting to be approved for my disability benefits, but have heard it can take up to a year or longer. In the meantime, I'm doing what I can to make some money to sustain us until those checks start coming in. I'm a single father raising two kids, and we can't get by on no income coming in. These pieces are made by 3 generations of my family: my father, me & my son. This also counts towards my son's building trades classes by doing woodworking. He has good teachers in me and my father. I've had some luck selling several of these pieces around town, but would like to take the opportunity to reach a much broader customer base.

Sometimes we just have to work with what we've got, and what I've got is a BUNCH of this black walnut wood to work with. I'm looking into anything else I can make out of this wood, and have started on a wall mount gun rack, some coat racks and key hangers. I'm open for suggestions, and will take on custom orders if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to read this

PEACE!

Ghost

2. Thank you
We take pride in our work for sure. That's part of what I'm trying to teach my son with this also. He has some learning disablilties as far as book learning goes, but is very good at working with his hands. I'm trying to prepare him for being able to support himself when he is older. He's 14 now, but his reading and writing skills are on about a 4th grade level, which is a good improvement in the 6 months that I've been homeshooling him. He was on a second grade level. He learns better through repetition, so I spend one day on reading, one day on writing, one day on math, instead of the 50 mins/day in each class that they get in the schools. He seems to be adjusting well because he has one on one help instead of a teacher trying to teach a class of 20 - 30 students. His counselors have been well pleased with his progress over the last 6 months.

Welcome to DU, Sandi :hi:

PEACE!

15. Weird, my son has the same thing. Not a good book learner
but good with his hands. Good luck to you.

20. I'm pretty much the same way, so I recognized it and understood it in my son
I can read & write just fine, but as for following written instructions on assembling a product or something like that, I can read all day long and not "get it", but SHOW me one time, and I'll do it forever...

Hands on experience is by far the best teacher...

Good luck to you and your son...

PEACE!

12. Thank you very much!
I wasn't sure about posting on craigslist, maybe it's just downloadable items that aren't allowed to be posted there?

Thanks for your help and efforts on this...

I had an Iraq Veteran from another site I go to just tell me he was going to order a dozen of them "for my brothers who are still over there in hell". He's going back for his 4th tour later this month...

19. Overseas Shipping
I'll have to check the shipping calculators from the Post Office and from UPS to see which one is better. Of course, I'd need an address that I was shipping to.

I'll read up on it, but I think I can use priority mail and ship to an APO. If you'd like to check for yourself, they'll be mailed from zip code 37322 for the post office or 37303 for UPS.

We've actually done a few toilet paper holders... I'll look into the napkin & paper towel holders. I'm sure we can make them and have a pattern somewhere...
