Post Iran attack world...
So last week moron* carpet bombed Iran into oblivion.

Good thing I filled up my car the night before the attack at the low low price of 2.75, because I don't know when I will be able to fill it up again now that it's at 4.96 a gallon.

my local mass transit had to hike the fairs a dime. I can work with that.

However, stopping by the grocery, I noticed the price of bread and milk shot up. I picked up a few day old loaves and headed home on my bike. I have noticed quite of few of them in the last couple of days. Good thing mine is in good shape.

At home, I switch my coat for my thick hooded sweatshirt over my flannel shirt. Turn the heat way down and start a fire in my fire place.

I'm glad I switched over to fluorescents last month because no doubt my electric bill, as little as I will be using it now, will no doubt be sky rocketing.

My wife and I have put a timer in our bathroom to time our hot showers. As much as I like them in the cold weather, times are tough and are going to get worse now that the middle east is a glowing cauldron of nuclear waste.

I heard a report that the soldiers in Afghanistan are being evacuated due to high radiation levels.

The "cloud" is not supposed to hit the U.S. but a few meteorologists have made some alarming reports about it hitting the west coast sometime in the next couple of weeks, but that was a few days ago and nothing has been said in the news since.

No reports out of Tehran since it all started. The German press has stated that the capital of Iran is inhabitable.

Several impromptu war demonstrations turned into riots yesterday as the police used "non-lethal" weapons against them that killed 23 people.

The House had an emergency session and an open call for the presidents impeachment was finally tabled.

Tony Snow stated, that the president is doing what he thinks is best for the country and to protect us from any terror attack. So any talk of impeachment will be met by the president with the full measure of his office.

My block association is getting together tonight to talk about car pooling, backyard and (gasp) front yard gardens. I was happy about that, because I have always hated front lawns.

I have my rechargeable light going so my wife and I can read at night.

I'll be signing off now, the local power authority is issuing a statement tomorrow about rolling blackouts, so I will be limiting my computer use from now on.

How long will this last? I haven't the foggiest idea, but I do know this, since that fool bombed Iran, both China and Russia are really pissed off at us and the Chinese navy has sent a battle group toward Taiwan.

Russia has threatened to cut off diplomatic relations with us.

Europe has issued a strongly worded response at the UN and is talking about a trade embargo.

Even the poodle Tony Blair is appalled.

Welcome to the future.

1. I take it you live a long way from NYC, DC, Chi, LA, or SF?
Because there's no mention of police state security measures being imposed in those and other cities, and the mounting fear that people live in as they wait for the inevitable retaliation for the million or so innocent people murdered in Iran.

Or, maybe, it'll be Denver, Atlanta, and Seattle that get hit first. Can't imagine there'll be any urban area in America that isn't living under a cloud of apprehension, anger and distrust.

The costs will be greater than economic.

5. Have you ever seen the movie, "Testament" from the early 80's?
it's about the slow erosion of a small town after a nuclear attack. It's a heartbreaking movie.

The one thing that struck me about that film was the lack news that the characters received from the outside world.

The news we get will be more controlled then what we get today (if you could imagine it being possible) and rumor and gossip would be the rule.

I live in a small city and yeah there will be a lot more problems than what I state, but I was focusing more on day to day life with a bit of news dribbling in from time to time as which I think it would be the more likely situation. I think the 24 hour news cycle will change dramatically if we bombed Iran. We won't get the 24/7 blast of news like we got when moron* first bombed Iraq. It will be very different this time around.

Like I said to my wife, one day we will wake up and find out that we will have bombed Iran. no run up, no UN, no nothing, just poof out of the blue.

7. I thought I'd seen nearly all in this genre, and this seems one of the best.
I was born in the mid-1950s, and as a boy read a lot of books and watched many movies about nuclear war. "Testament" seems a lot like "Alas, Babylon", which was re-issued in paperback a few years ago. Babylon is set in rural northern Florida. Not as grim, though - the slow, doomed fate of the characters in Testament seems to have a lot more in common with "On The Beach", the last surviving humans in southern Australia who, as the radiation cloud nears, kill themselves in ways that are most meaningful to themselves.

I still remember Duck and Cover drills in my First Grade school room - that was 1962. We lived only 50 miles from Manhattan, so I don't think it would've made much difference.

I don't believe we'll actually do it. For my daughter's sake, I won't let it happen.

8. On the beach was a brilliant movie, especially for the time in which it was made...
I too remember the duck and cover drills. I will never ever forget hearing a comment by one of the teachers to another (supposedly out of our earshot) something along the lines of, "What's the point of these stupid drills?" The other responded, "Yeah, I know, we would all be vapors by now anyway."

It was at that point in my young life that everything about the way I looked at things changed.

I then realized what reading between the lines meant.

Check out Testament, it's heartbreaking. The opening scene it is a killer, emotionally speaking.

what's so interesting about the late 50's and the early 60's is that there was some truly amazing anti-war anti-nuke literature and films coming out. Everyone talks about the "edgy" stuff that is shown now, but given the climate back then, that stuff was beyond edgy. "the ugly american", "seven days in may", two fantastic books, still very relevant, that come to mind off the top of my head.
