It's been a rough winter. We're heading into a recession, and oil prices keep going up and up. $103 per barrel and nearly $4 a gallon as of today.
So, why wouldn't our Senators end oil subsidies and increase funding for clean energy? As the old saying goes,
"money talks".
That's why it was so encouraging last week when the House of Representatives passed a bill that would put an end to $17 billion in subsidies given to the oil industry over 10 years. Instead, the money would be used for tax credits for renewable energy sources and energy efficient technologies. This bill is an important step towards fighting global warming and creating a clean energy-independent America, but it still faces heavy opposition in the Senate. The Senate has killed a bill like this before- and they might do it again unless we stop them.
We need our elected officials to stand up for the good of the people-not Big Oil. Please urge your Senator to move beyond the shortsighted interests of Big Oil.
It is preposterous that Congress continues to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize the most powerful and profitable industry on Earth. Unfortunately, it may come as no surprise that members of the Senate also take on average twice the amount of money from Big Oil than members in the House. We need a true Separation of Oil and State. We can't afford to have members of Congress who put the money interests of Big Oil ahead of the interest of the people.
Please take a stand and tell your Senator to support clean energy today.http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizations/oilchange/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=23460&t=wide.dwt
