Fallon 'may lose job over Iran war'
Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 02:32 PM by Swede
According to a new Esquire article by Thomas Barnett; Admiral Fallon may be prematurely 'relieved of his command' as soon as this summer to be replaced with a more 'pliable' commander.

"If that were to happen, it may well mean that the president and vice-president intend to take military action against Iran before the end of this year and don't want a commander standing in their way," says the article which will be published on March 12.

3. I remember hearing he'd resign if ordered to bomb Iran. Seems they've decided his fate.
He gets the ax.

16. I was thinking the same thing ...

There are a handful of generals that both oppose the Bush Middle East policies and obviously have excellent foreign policy experience. One of these military leaders would make an excellent VP candidate, or Secretary of Defense.

11. K&R
A "brilliant strategist," forced out of his career position for speaking out against Bush,
while in the middle of two wars (Afghanistan and Iraq), because he doesn't approve of
going into a third one in Iran.

Lord help us and protect us from our pResident.

17. Something is very clear ...

The military is almost broken. We don't have the manpower to go to war with Iran without opening our own backsides up and abandonding all our other foreign commitments.

I'm cool the "all volunteer" peacetime Army. During wartime, if it lasts more 16 months, I think have to draft replacements. That way there are new guys ready to come in at two years. Nobody should have to risk life and limb for over that amount of time. A country goes to war, not a select few who were "re-volunteered" by their selfish commander in chief.

20. What seems frighteningly clear to me is that Bush is actually planning to strike Iran before he
leaves office. Adm. Fallon was the main thing standing in the way of that happening, and now he is gone.
If Bush/Cheney were not trying to achieve this, then why would Fallon not have stayed on until a new administration
is in power, i.e. November?

This is truly awful news.

18. This offers little optimism, but if Jim Hoaglund's latest ed. is any
indication of how many repubs are feeling, it may signal there would be less support for any kind of action in Iran.(?)

How to Make an Exit
Jim Hoaglund

George W. Bush promises to sprint to the finish line of his presidency. The nation must respond in one voice to its leader: "Oy." And "vey."

Instead of a sprint, Mr. President, you need to stage a deliberate military-style retreat from the Oval Office to diminish further losses and protect the limited gains made on your watch. This is true politically, economically and, most of all, in foreign policy.

That you get off stage, and how you do it, is vitally important to John McCain. His chances for victory in November ride primarily on escaping -- albeit respectfully -- from your record, your failed strategies, and your continuing belligerency toward those who disagree with you at home and abroad.

You can help your party's nominee most by fading away gradually, carefully choosing battles where the prestige of your office outweighs the animosities that swirl around you. You need to become a reverse Cheshire Cat, Mr. President: Leave no grin behind.
