Drunk United Airlines Passenger Faces Federal Charges
United passenger charged for alleged drunken behavior on flight
Posted 1/23/2007 10:33 AM ET
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A United Airlines passenger faces federal charges for allegedly making statements about a hijacking, trying to open a cabin door and fighting with flight attendants while aboard a flight from Boston to San Francisco.
Erin Callahan Lambert, 28, who apparently was intoxicated during Flight 179 on Sunday, was taken into custody after the plane landed at San Francisco International Airport, authorities said. She was charged Monday with assaulting a flight attendant and interfering with the performance of duties of flight crewmembers.

About halfway through the six-hour, non-stop flight, Lambert got up, walked to the back of the plane and began talking on her cellphone, FBI Special Agent Brian Gilhooly wrote in an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco.

When two flight attendants told Lambert to turn off the phone and return to her seat, she "refused and became combative," Gilhooly wrote. Asked who she was talking to, she said "I'm calling 911 because the plane is being hijacked," the affidavit said.

Lambert eventually returned to her seat, but later she tried to take her luggage, including her pet dog in a carrier, to the restroom, according to the affidavit. When told to leave her belongings at her seat, she said, "No, you are going to have to kill me and my dog," then locked herself in the restroom, Gilhooly wrote.

Lambert exited moments later and "started walking rapidly toward the front of the airplane," saying, "I'm getting off the aircraft," he wrote.

Flight attendants and passengers stopped her as she headed for a cabin door and forced her into a seat, where the plane's purser handcuffed her, according to the affidavit. She managed to wriggle free from those handcuffs, so plastic ties were placed on her wrists, it said.

"During the entire assault, Ms. Lambert was yelling profanities, cursing and spitting on the flight attendants and other passengers," Gilhooly wrote.

Lambert, a Bay Area resident, was turned over to San Francisco airport police upon arrival at SFO, where she refused to be interviewed by the FBI and requested an attorney, the affidavit said.

4. She deserved to be cuffed and arrested!
I drink on flights...probably more than a lot of you do...but Inever get combative with anyone. The one I feel very sorry for is her little dog.

11. Drinking on flights
I know of few greater pleasures than sitting in AirTran business class (not a big jump in price, but sooooo worth it) with a book, a sandwich purchased pre flight and a few Jack Daniels (Prefer Jim Beam, but they have no real Bourbon on AirTran). Getting a pleasant buzz with good fiction at 30,000 ft is a real treat.

Talk about escapist....

8. Not typical anything
Sounds more like some mental problems, exacerbated by drugs/alcohol.

It would be scary to be on a flight with anyone in that state. Glad no one was hurt.

12. Paranoid psychotic episode
Probably has a history of mental illness.

She should be in a hospital, not under indictment. Very sad.

18. About half way through a six hour flight, she became belligerent?
Since that means she was on the plane for three hours, one has to assume that she was drinking alcohol on the plane.

Since there are serious restrictions on liquids being carried on the plane by passengers, I have to assume that the airline employees were selling her alcoholic drinks.

If that is the case, shouldn't they have refused her any more alcoholic drinks? Bar tenders can be sued for selling alcohol to customers who have had too much, so shouldn't airline policy dictate the cut off for a passenger who has had enough, let alone too much?

21. Thye're blaming this incident on alcohol, but I think this was just one
more arrogant rich bitch who was on her cell phone and didn't want to be told what she can and can't do! She was pi**ed at being told to stopthe call, and chose all the wrong things to do to get back at the flight attendent. Just anotheridiot who thinksmaking a "joke" out of hijacking, thinking she could get away with it.
