1. Rubbermaid isn't losing business because of WALMART
Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 05:45 PM by Rosemary2205
they are losing business because of mismanagement and a failure to innovate to stay in the marketplace.

Edit to add -- but yeah, walmart sucks.

Edited on Wed Jan-24-07 05:51 PM by Bjornsdotter
There's more but this will give you a start

History has shown that suppliers suffer if they run afoul of Wal-Mart. Rubbermaid raised the prices it charged Wal-Mart in the mid-1990s because of an 80% jump in the cost of a key ingredient in its plastic containers. The retailer responded by giving more shelf space to lower-priced competitors, helping drive Rubbermaid into a 1999 merger with rival Newell, says John Mariotti, a former Rubbermaid executive. "Rubbermaid earned Wal-Mart's wrath by not giving it the best deal," he says.

In the CNBC documentary about Wal-Mart, I think the situation with Rubbermaid is mentioned
Basically Wal-Mart tells their suppliers what prices they're going to buy the products at and it's up to the companies to cut their costs to meet Wal-Mart's demands. The other option is to not sell at Wal-Mart.

32. Sears used to do this to its suppliers also, in the 1960's when it was strong.
They could charge what Sears dictated or lose the business. And after they'd built up their factories, etc. to accommodate the Sears pbusiness, they were in debt and couldn't give up the Sears contract because then they couldn't pay their bills.

It used to be known that getting a series of large Sears contracts put a supplier under Sears control.

Guess it's the same whoever's the dominant buyer.

31. I remember the show...it was about how Rubbermaid became dependent...
on WalMart sales. WalMart then demanded a huge price cut or else. Rubbermaid refused and was then tossed out of WalMart. Factories were then shut down and the equipment sold to Chinese buyers.

I don't think Rubbermaid was "forced out of business", but WalMart's ruthless negotiating tactics did result in a lot of pain for American Rubbermaid workers.

My father in law (one of 'em) works for Rubbermaid-Newell out of their NC office and he's fine. If anything there's corporate restructuring or maybe dropping the Rubbermaid name altogether, but they are too huge to go down. I need to see what context Randi used when she made that statement.

Blagojevich is trying to sell the idea of privatizing the state lottery. For a one time payment of $10 billion we will lose the huge annual income the lottery brings in.

Plus of course all the administrative jobs will be offshored.

There is no place this nonsense will end.

39. Companies WALMART has killed
This was from 2005, but one can assume it has not gotten better.
Check out the other companies that have been victims of WALMART....

Wal-Mart's 'Low prices' destroying American companies, American jobs
<snip>
Rubbermaid is the largest producer of consumer rubber products in the United States, and Wal-Mart sells by far the largest volume of Rubbermaid products of any retail store. In January 2001, Joseph Galli, the new chief executive officer, had an intensive series of meetings with Wal-Mart management. Since January 2001, Rubbermaid has shut down 69 out of its 400 facilities, and fired 11,000 workers. The equity research director at Associated Trust & Co., C. Mark Heaseldon, bluntly stated the reason, "To be able to meet the demands from key customers, like Wal-Mart ... to become competitive in price." He added that Galli would have to "shift about 50 percent of production to low-cost countries." This could force the closure of an additional 131 Rubbermaid facilities, and the firing of an additional 20,000 workers.
