Head off that next bogus freeper email at the pass! Keep these references from Snopes handy!
I've been thinking: Considering the number of times people come into DU seeking advice on how to defuse the latest stupid email they were sent by some freeper coworker, relative or (yes) friend, maybe it wouldn't hurt to try to keep tabs on nonsense currently floating around as it morphs, so one is ready when one spies it in one's inbox to come right back and squelch it dead.

Snopes.com is always your friend, of course. But just in case you haven't wandered around there lately, here's a sampling of hot freeper nonsense, so the second someone mails it to you, you can hit Reply All with the truth. (Note: Many more truths are to be found at that site. This is a mere sampling of the kind of horse-hockey now touring the Internets.)

Each URL below is titled with a general description of the bogusness contained within a related email, for your convenience. True, some of them are direct attempts to slam a particular Dem candidate vs. Dems as a whole, but if you are a good Dem, you won't stand idly by while others attempt to smear any Dem candidate with falsehoods...will you???

All you have to do is look below for the general theme of the stupid email you got, then send the URL beneath it to all recipients, as well as the SENDER. Whether or not you want to include a nice note to the effect of "I hate to see a smart person like you falling for this shit" is up to you.

Hope this list comes in handy for many DU'ers...here we go!

1. You might also look into the DU Propaganda Debunking Group.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=284

About.com has a good urban legends segment:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/

Snopes and About.com have decent search engines so they are my favorites.

Here's Factcheck.org:

and TruthOrFiction.com

2. Thanks for the recommend.
It seems as if not enough people look at that group, because just about every day I see posts asking for help with some stupid email debunking.

3. Republican liemail volume has picked up, to commemorate the election season.
I never see liemails that slander Republicans, only Democrats. Not saying they don't exist, but they are pretty rare. Being a despicable liar must be part of the Republican genre. And of the many times I have replied (not to all) to refute such a claim, only once did the person do the right thing and forward my rebuttal to other recipients, to set the record straight.

It's usually pretty easy to debunk these things once you get the hang of it, because the people who create and forward these things are pretty stupid. And in a reply to all, when one of the right wingers challenges a rebuttal, it's pretty easy to pick them apart because most of them only know how to forward, copy and paste from a website, and quote Rush.

4. It's not necessary to lie about Republicans.
What would we lie about? That they're gay, bigoted, philandering hypocrites? That they're greedy, cowardly, ignoramuses?

5. Ha ha, you got me there!
And if they didn't lie, what would they say? We're really just acting in the interests of the richest 10% at the expense of all the rest of you? You're right, they pretty much have to lie or there wouldn't be a one of them elected to any office anywhere in the nation.

7. I'm pretty sure that by November...
...there will be tons of video, and "eyewitness accounts" of Obama feasting on the blood of Christian infants while raping their helpless, virginal mothers.

I think after that, perhaps we will have finally hit rock bottom as a culture. Will the healing begin after that? Who knows.
