CompUSA Closing More Than 50 Percent of Stores

NEW YORK, Feb 27 (Reuters) - CompUSA, the computer and gadget retailer owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, said on Tuesday it would close more than half of its U.S. retail locations over the next two to three months to focus on top performing locations.

CompUSA said in a statement it would close 126 of its stores and would receive a $440 million cash capital infusion, but it was not specific as to the source of the cash. The company also said it would cut costs and restructure.

The company operates 225 stores, which its Web site says are located in the United States and Puerto Rico.

"Based on changing conditions in the consumer retail electronics markets, the company identified the need to close and sell stores with low performance or nonstrategic, old store layouts and locations faced with market saturation," Roman Ross, chief executive officer of CompUSA, said in the statement.

7. Yes, newegg ftw.
They kill CompUSA & Best Buy as far as pricing goes.

ZipZoomFly.com is not bad either.

13. No, they are owned by Mexican holding company belonging to billionaire Carlos Slim Helú
They are traded on the Mexico stock exchange as a subsidiary of U.S. Commercial (USCOMBI.MX)

6. That's too bad
it will cost a lot of folks their jobs and that is never a good thing. I haven't ever had a problem with them, but I shop there only when it's time to buy a new Mac Desktop and use their 2 year free financing.

9. Not too long ago
the parent company closed all of their "Good Guys" stores.

I can't say I am overly sad (other than for the employees). I tried to buy a computer there a few years ago
(when they had a 0% financing deal), and first they couldn't find the computer in their ad, then the one I bought
didn't work, then the slight-more-expensive replacement didn't work, then the even-more-expensive replacement didn't
work. While waiting for them to test the third one, the manager was hassling me for having opened the cover, and was
trying to hard-sell me the extended warranty. I told him that I was tired of the fact that each time I left there I was
on the hook for a little more money, and still didn't have a working computer (And this was the Woodland Hills store, where
there is a Fry's a Best Buy, a Circuit City, an Office Depot, and a Good Guys each a block away).

I settled for the refund, and bought the computer elsewhere.

10. More Americans will be free of rebate hell. They are the most dishonest company...
when it comes to pricing. In their stores, at least the couple of ones we have in Denver, they always put up the price of the product with rebates, and the other real price in really really small print. I once purchased a monitor and was shocked to find out it was $50 more at the register. It fucking pissed me off!
