Re: SOTU, My girlfriend said that is the only gracious thing Bush has ever said as president
when the first sentence of his speech was, "And tonight I have the high privilege and distinct honor of my own as the first president to begin the sotu message with these words: Madam Speaker."

from there on it was downhill.

1. Give credit where credit is due.....
That was a gracious sentence.

Then - into the crapper.

2. He had to, the world was watching
You should've seen when he came to Michigan very soon after we elected our very first woman Governor (Granholm). He could barely bring himself to reference the fact that she was in attendance, muchless note her special distinction.

He's such an asswipe.

4. Yes, the first and last
He is not gracious and the comment was merely a formality. Any Democratic Speaker, whether Madam or not, is an anathema to these people. It was an empty gesture, lip service without the requisite respect behind it.

But it was somewhat surprising that he did it at all.

6. It may have been a gracious thing to say
but the man is totally grace-less. The woman who sold her creation to disney - if you listened closely the only time he referred to her gender was when he referenced 'her child'. Other than that the description was gender-less.

7. Ya, he finally found a "legacy"!!
the first president to utter "madame speaker" -- the only good thing to come out of his administration and he didn't have jack cheese to do with it.

That's pathetic.

8. Don't forget, he was reading someone else's words
off the teleprompter. He wouldn't have thought to say that, and certainly not in such a nice way, on his own.

9. At least he didn't walk up behind and grab her by the shoulders -- did he?
I don't have TV, so am not at all sure.

11. He ALMOST said 'Global warming'
just him paying lip service to needing to address 'global climate change' through renewable energy sources kind of shocked me.
