Is this racist?
If there was a politician running for office. And that politician went to a church. And that church advocated the following. Would it be racist?

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly White and Unapologetically Christian... We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These White Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Whites are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:
1. Commitment to God
2. Commitment to the White Community
3. Commitment to the White Family
4. Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
5. Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
6. Adherence to the White Work Ethic
7. Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
8. Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
9. Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills available to the White Community
10. Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting White Institutions
11. Pledge allegiance to all White leadership who espouse and embrace the White Value System
12. Personal commitment to embracement of the White Value System.

Not sure how to take that - my last piece was an attempt at humor that I admit wasn't as fully developed as it might be.

The freeps are using his affiliation with the Trinity United Church of Christ to paint him as a racist. Ho hum.

Here's a link to the original Neanderthal's article: http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/rush/070221

I wouldn't recommend anyone go there, however.

The first hit brought up the screed by that meathead on the freeper site. The author is apparently an author and "humorist." You can tell he's a humorist, because he entitled his article "Obamination." See what he did there? Verrrry clever. :hi:

More on this hilarious polymath:

<snip>

Erik Rush is a contributor of social commentary to numerous print and online publications. Born in New York City in 1961, from 1975 to 1986, he worked as a studio, club, and stage musician and in biomedical research. In 1986, Erik relocated to the Southwestern U.S.

In 2002, his first novel, "The Angels Fell" was released. His nonfiction book "It's the Devil, Stupid! (Our Real Enemy and Why We Don't Talk About Him)" was published in June 2006.

Erik is also a Staff Writer for the New Media Alliance, Inc., and is acting Associate Editor and Publisher of TheRealityCheck.org. In addition to work and his family, he also participates in the Praise band and martial arts at his church and enjoys writing music, remodeling, and refinishing guitars. His entertaining and informative (if bizarre) website can be found at www.erikrush.com.

My my. What a guy. I'm guessing his stint in "biomedical research" was spent as a subject.

Is this where we put our thinking caps on and try to figure out if there's any difference between advocacy for an oppressed group of people, and advocacy for a privileged group of people?

Because in the America I live in it's pretty damn obvious that white Christian males still have MOST of the wealth, MOST of the power, and MOST of the opportunity. The "Dream" has not yet been realized.

Do you not feel that black people are as talented and able as any other race. If so, why would any race need to be ethnocentric. For discussion please.... Why is it ok for a black church but not a white church. My point is,... neither should.

Your question makes no sense.

It's very idealistic of you to want that reality. But unfortunately we live in a country that is deeply divided because of its history of racial prejudice, a history that clearly is being played out right here on this thread.

32. Then you've answered your own question.
Explicitly advocating for a historically oppressed group neither puts their rights over the historically oppressing group, nor is it racist.

29. It's an invalid question. White's weren't subject to slavery, forced segregation, and
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 09:08 AM by izzybeans
continued discrimination. That type of oppression necessitates seeking common community. It's like calling historically black colleges racist when all the other colleges are historically exclusive to whites. Its a demeaning question and racist in its intent. We don't live in a color blind society. Is the fact that most suburban schools are white and most urban schools are black and latino racist? Is the fact that the baptist church is split along the color line because the original baptist church would not and still to a large extent do no accept blacks racist? Is wondering why a black church would be worried about the black community, in the context of a nation buit on racial prejudice and segregation, racist?

And the answer to your question is yes. It is racist. Go ask David Duke.

39. Perhaps we could salvage this thread
by turning it into a teach-in.

Submission #1:

Wealth Gap Between Blacks and Whites Has Grown Larger, Scholars Find
"Right now, almost 80 percent of black kids begin their adult lives with no assets whatsoever," said Oliver. "That's not the case for white kids. If they don't have financial resources in hand, they have access to them through their families. Most black kids don't have that available to them."

According to some researchers, as much as 80 percent of the wealth people accumulate over the course of their lifetimes actually begins as a gift from a relative, he added. That gift can come in the form of a down payment on a first home, a college education, or an inheritance from a parent or grandparent.

"If you look at lack of wealth, you find it among all sectors of the population," Oliver continued, "but even disadvantaged whites can generate more wealth and pass it on from generation to generation than disadvantaged African Americans."

"The overriding idea people bring away from this book is that the prism of wealth allows one to understand the historical accumulation of inequality and how it continues to structure the lives of African Americans differently from that of whites," Oliver said.
