An Unofficial Impeachment

Libby Trial Exposes Neocon Shadow Government
By Sydney Schanberg

Day by day, witness by witness, exhibit by exhibit, Patrick Fitzgerald, the prosecutor in the trial of Dick Cheney’s man, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby, is accomplishing what no one else in Washington has been able to: He has impeached the Presidency of George W. Bush.

Of course, it’s an unofficial impeachment, but it will also, through its documentation, be inerasable. The trial record—testimony, exhibits, the lot—will be there, in one place, for investigators, scholars, reporters and Congress to pore over. It goes far beyond the charges against Mr. Libby. It is, instead, a road map to the abuses of power that Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney and their shadow government of neoconservatives have committed as the neocons carried out what they had been planning for years: an invasion of Iraq—and other military excursions—for the purpose of expanding American dominion.

Schanberg goes on to discuss the case as well as PNAC and their delusional agenda.

Among the 25 signatories to the PNAC founding statement: Dick Cheney, I. Lewis Libby and Paul Wolfowitz. Most of these names echo throughout the Libby trial record. Besides the damning notes from Mr. Cheney, accounts of conversations between Mr. Cheney and Mr. Libby and Mr. Libby’s subsequent conversations with other pivotal administration officials, there is at least one document, in Mr. Cheney’s handwriting, that suggests the President had direct knowledge of the campaign to discredit Mr. Wilson.

The trial and its record was always all about the unnecessary war—a war created by massive and deliberate lying about an imminent security threat that wasn’t there. That’s why the President and his men were desperate to shut Mr. Wilson up.

5. Great. The world knows what America can't. The US media bucket doesn't hold water
There's a hole in our bucket, dear Liza. Our Republic is burning and the fire buckets are all rotten.

Sadly despite Sinclair's warning, It DID happen here, and IT AIN'T OVER,

10. Bush and Cheney wrote the articles against themselves long ago.
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 03:24 PM by pat_k
Every time Bush and Cheney invoke unitary authoritarian power they declare their intent to willfully violate the Constitution. They've followed up that declaration by repeatedly, willfully, and publicly violating the Constitution. With each act, they write another article of impeachment and issue a challenge to Congress "We've just erased more of the Constitution. Stop us if you dare."

Tragically, the bits added to the record by the Libby case can't move them because their refusal to impeach has nothing to do with not having a case. It's the irrational rationalizations and assumptions that pervade the beltway that immobilizr them. Until those barriers are demolished, impeachment will remain outside the realm of the possibility in their insular world.

As long as impeachment of the table, declarations of "oversight" are nothing but declarations that "we in the leadership will do nothing to stop you." A threat like Biden's threat to impeach if they bomb Iran, is permission drop the bombs. Once the bombs are dropped, the deed is done. Bush and Cheney have advanced the devastating agenda of their tiny fascist faction. That's all that matters. No law, political pressure, or threat of future action can stop them. They will only be stopped when the Congressional leadership takes up the only "lethal" weapon in their arsenal: impeachment.

11. Excellent article about an excellent prosecutor. Fitzgerald has
impeached the Presidency of George W. Bush.

It's getting pretty hard to ignore the enormous elephant in the living room.
