My letter on Lieberman's quickly forgotten promises will be printed
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 09:14 AM by NewJeffCT
Just got the call last night... this is what I submitted (this paper prefers LTTEs be between 350-500 words) edited to add the newspaper's URL: www.journalinquirer.com

>>>>
In recent weeks, Senator Joe Lieberman has started to make noises that if he does not get his way on Iraq, he will switch parties and start caucusing with Republicans. Because of how closely divided the senate is right now, this flip-flop would give the Republican Party control of the Senate.

Before the primary, Lieberman told CNN, “I will caucus with the Democrats.” He did not qualify that support at all.

When he spoke with the NY Times on October 3, 2006, he was asked about aligning with Democrats who opposed him after losing the primary, and Lieberman said, “"I’ve given my word that’s what I intend to do. I am going to caucus with the Democrats."

Lieberman’s spokespeople supported that message. Dan Gerstein said, “Senator Lieberman is a Democrat, will continue to be a Democrat and is committed to caucusing with the Democrats should he be reelected.” And, just before the election Tammy Sun, repeated the promise that he will “absolutely caucus with the Democrats.”

After losing the primary, Lieberman’s message was that nobody wanted to end the war more than he did. He continued with this theme until he won election.

Soon after the election, however, Lieberman jumped on board President Bush’s radical plan to escalate the war in Iraq, despite the fact that previous troop “surges” had failed miserably the previous four times they were tried.

But now that Democrats have come out and actually proposed some anemic and inadequate measures opposing the war escalation in Iraq, a position supported by the vast majority of Americans, as well as the Joint Chiefs, a majority of our military and former commanders in Iraq and several key personnel in former White Houses, Lieberman quickly threatened to switch parties.

If Connecticut residents knew that all Lieberman’s pre-election unqualified anti-war promises of wanting to end the debacle in Iraq would have so quickly been thrown under the bus so he could embrace the fringe idea of prolonging and escalating the war in Iraq, would they have voted differently? If they knew all of his promises to stick with the Democrats would, in two months, become the meager, “I hope not to,” when asked about switching parties, would Lieberman still have garnered one-third of the Democratic votes and half of the independents?

Unfortunately, it seems that many are likely stuck with buyer’s remorse over Lieberman's quickly forgotten promises. Those of us who saw through Lieberman before the election can only hope that the terrific Democratic prospects in the 2008 Senate races will keep Lieberman in line until that time.

3. Perfect!
DU has 100,000+ registered members. Every one of them, as often as their local newspaper will allow, should write letters on subjects of national political interest, but with a local slant. This letter is a textbook example, and I hope folks around here follow your lead.

4. Very well said. I'll bet lots of Connecticut voters are
having "buyer's remorse." How they got taken in by the turncoat in the first place remains a mystery.

5. Not a word about the Katrina investigation lie. It's clear that Connecticut voters...
... simply don't give a rat's ass. I can't imagine anyone in their right mind trusting the CT electorate to do anything right.

8. The country has been taken in by Bush twice
While there was obvious fraud supporting Bush both times, it was still close enough to be stolen.

The problem was that prior to the primary, Lamont was treated pretty nicely by the CT media - he was kind of something new and something different to them.

As soon as the primary was over, it seemed like the media went back to supporting Lieberman - for 2 months, there was hardly anything negative printed about Lieberman, while small things for Lamont were blown out of proportion.

9. I'm in California and stuck with Arnold, so I know
how easily people are suckered in.

You'd think that by refusing to accept the will of the primary voters, Lieberman would have been sent to political exile, but I'm sure there were a lot of forces at work including a repuke candidate shunned by his own party and support from the corporate media whores. It's a shame.

7. I have no remorse.
I supported Lamont with money and time. Any Dem who voted for him should be required to switch parties along with Joe and his Lying Lieberman Party asswipes.

10. The problem is
that if you only paid casual attention, the media was friendly pro-Joe after he lost the primary... and nobody in the media has yet called him out on his flip-flops on both the war and on his promise to remain a Democrat.

like the USA mediawhores that are killing our Country?

27. The Manchester paper was an exception
I used to get the paper quite a bit in the 90s because I liked their sports section. However, it was also very RW politically - they made the Washington Times look liberal.

However, I got a new job in 2001 and stopped getting it for several years until noticing it again about a year ago after a new job and a move... and they had changed to a left-of-center newspaper. They were definitely strongly anti-Lieberman, and had even called out Dems a few times for not speaking out strongly enough against the war.

I think you should nudge Olbermann.

17. who knows what Lieberman's position is today?
he changes his position depending on either the wind or to whom he is speaking.

so, by the time Olbermann has looked into it, Lieberman could again be vowing that nobody wants the troops home more than him.

I want some answers. I have a question to ask of Senator Reid.

When will he strip LIEberman of his chairmanship?

Why hasn't Harry CORRECTED the fallacy that the Dems could lose MAJORITY unless they court LIEberman? Don't we deserve a response to this important piece of info? I certainly think that we do.

Can Conneticut voters do a "recall petition" on Holy Joe?

If not one that actually recalls him, but that indicates a level of "no confidence"?
