When did we move away from the "graphic" warning on pictures of bloody children
and other graphic pictures?
That is how it has always been done around here because everyone should have a choice if they want to look at bloody bodies.
I post when my granddaughter is around the computer and since she is only 4, I don't want to open it up and have her see something that might upset her.
But instead, I am told by a newcomer that he won't do it because HE alone has decided that I need to see it.

1. I suggest blocking that individual. (ignore function)
That is downright rude for someone else to decide what you "need" to see with no warning.

People should show a little class and give fair warning.

2. Never mind
the fact that such images can serve as triggers for PTSD sufferers....

Lots of very valid reasons to include warnings of graphic images.

3. One person doesn't make a "we". IMHO
I also post sometimes when there are children around and appreciate the "graphic" warning. As an adult there are some things I'd rather not see but I have the maturity to handle it. But it's my job to protect the children around me from viewing these sorts of things.

Granted a hardass would say "but the Iraqi children have to deal with it so why shouldn't our kids too". I've heard that silliness before. Unfortunately they seem to miss the point where we don't want Iraqi kids having to deal with this shit either..............

Fortunately there are very few cases of hardasses on DU. The best thing I can tell you is to use the alert and ignore buttons.

4. My guess is that you will have to put the ignorant scum on ignore.
You can't educate ignorance, but thanks for the reminder to all. My guess is that the OP is not really feeling the horror of the pictures but wanting to shock. A caring person would give a warning. It is a good thing to provide a warning when posting a graphic picture.

5. it's poor social skills
Most people, when they join a community like DU, understand that you should lie low, be friendly, and understand how things are done, not jump in and try to impose your way of doing things on everyone. It's the same for both real-world and online communities.

Other people need to drastically call attention to themselves and tell the established members of the community just how much smarter they are than everyone else.

It comes down to having the skills to navigate new social situations.
