3. Actually, it's called an extratropical cyclone.
Edited on Thu Mar-01-07 10:19 PM by originalpckelly
It's basically a land hurricane, as you said.

I watch the same sit all the time. Very good to get a general idea of what the storm looks like from space. There's even an archive, so you can download images and put together movies of major storms that have happened in the past month or so.

5. I live in Colorado, and we're still getting strong winds from that system...
that's killing people all the way over in Alabama. That's the power of mother nature.

4. is that happening now?
that is one of the scariest things i've seen in a long time. Tat reminds me of the pics when the "perfect Storm" of 91 was happening of the atlantic coast. I couldn't get out of downtown Boston fast enough.

6. Yes, and I'm deeply worried about everyone.
Those are the most recent water vapor maps. They're terrifying. It's a cyclone, just not one over the ocean!

9. Dayum!
I'm hundreds of miles from the center of that thing, but barometer is 29.39 and falling. It would be interesting to know what barometric pressures are in the vicinity of the center.

21. I've flown into Dubuque a few times with similar patterns. That area can be brutal!
Landed there one night with 3 inches of ice on the wings and the wind was blowing about 50 knots.

I'm in northeast TN and was interested in seeing how areas closer to the center of that low were affected. It's going to be a windy night and a windy tomorrow in lots of places!

18. I'm Not Far From The Center...Near Chicago
At 9:50pm CDT:

Barmoteter: 29.14mb

We're "in the eye" here...or so it seems. Been cloudy most of the day and not very windy.

The forecast is for gusty winds as we get on the backside of this thing.

This sure looks like the makings of a nasty Northeaster...

We see them each winter.

Notice that you can see the frontal boundaries in the radar map, and the Low is the center swirl.

By the time it gets here, it'll be rain and high winds.
Gusts up to 40 & 50 mph.
No snow or not much where I am! yeah!! :)
NH and Vermont are going to get a lot, though.
But they need it for the skiing!

25. This must be why I got so freaking tired this afternoon. It was beautiful this morning...
and I was all perky and ready to walk down to the beach and then WHAM! I felt like I could barely keep my eyes open.

I live on eastern Long Island. My brothers are supposed to fly to Florida tomorrow out of Kennedy. Please think postive for them.

Let's hope so, We've been getting this most of the day here in Michigan. We had about 3 inches of heavy snow early this A.M and the rest of the day went between rain and freezing rain. Windy now and still raining. Temps are rising.. 36F right now. there's lots of flooding on the roads, but I haven't heard of any serious issues yet. Hopefully, it's almost over.
