135. 4.4 does not qualify as an earthquake.
;) Most of us don't even look up from our reading until it's at least a 5.5.

Or, maybe it's leftovers from Loma Prieta. But, if a big truck goes by, I watch the animals to see if it's just me or if it's the earth.

While I no longer live in the area (spent five + years on the penninsula) - reading the distances which 'felt' this quake - YIKES! Across the bay, on the penninsula, in "the city"... In my five years - I experienced a few shakes. But nothing that apanned so many areas. Granted I missed the 89 quake which was felt all over the region.

Small aftershock though 2.8.

65. It does shake. My experience is this...
first it takes a few milliseconds to figure out what is happening ... then you realize it is an earthquake... and then i just ride them out, because there is not much chance to do anything else. This one, like several we have had over the last several months (seems like we have had more lately) have been real short. Doubt if this lasted 3 seconds.
Usually i kind of enjoy them.

carport. Don't keep it in the house 'cause doors can get jammed and then you can't access it.

We have a cental place to call and leave messages for each other - couldn't make local calls last time - but could call out of state. Then we get to our small boat any way we can. Would take about 3 hours walking from here - we'll wait it out there.

During Loma Prieta we were living on our boat (Alameda) it was the best place to be - we had propane, water, a generator and a safe bed to sleep in. We keep the boat stocked at all times. As long as we can get there we'll be ok. No children to worry about - just us two.

We had it down to who would carry the cat carriers and who would handle the aging dog.

Well, here I sit with 7 cats and a 6 month old puppy (lost my old girl). I still haven't figured out how to evac but we're cool for nearly a month if we have to shelter in place.

In the event of a tsunami (and we're in the zone), I have to go five blocks uphill to be safe. How to do that cats and all, I don't know.

On a historic note--check out the $.10 EXTRA put out by the old Herald-Examiner after the Sylmar quake.

If I recall, it happened just after daybreak and shook people out of their beds. I was almost 100 miles away down in Orange County and it felt like the entire house was coming apart. I could hear the loud noise of the nails creaking in the house's wood frame and the grinding of the entire frame back and forth. And it just seemed to go on and on and on.

Sat up in bed and the books in the bookcase over the bed fell where my head had just been. And it just kept shaking and shaking--for almost a minute, which is really long for an earthquake.

The library stacks were an awful mess--books were waist deep in the aisles.

The Northridge earthquake in 1994 was a 6.7--but we had left California by then and were living in Tornado alley.

116. Local news reports 4.2not sure of fault. at 8:40 pm.
Edited on Fri Mar-02-07 01:15 AM by caligirl
report from channel two LAFAYETTE -- A 4.2 earthquake centered one mile northeast of Lafayette rattled the entire Bay Area Thursday evening, but so far there are no reports of injuries or damage.

The quake struck at 8:40 p.m. off the Hayward fault, but away from the location in Berkeley where a number of quakes have been centered since a swarm of temblors in December. The quake had a depth of 10.3 miles and was strong enough to knock items off of shelves according to viewers who called the newsroom at KTVU Channel 2. One man

According to U.S. Geological Survey spokeswoman Stephanie Hannah, the quake was followed by two minor aftershocks, one 2.8 and another 1.8.

There are no reports of damage so far near the epicenter, one mile northeast of Lafayette and three miles southwest of Walnut Creek, but people have called the U.S. Geological Survey from as far north as Santa Rosa and as far south as Monterey with reports of shaking.

Hannah said a 4.2 magnitude earthquake usually is not strong enough to cause major damage. She also said that a recent earthquake in Berkeley was unrelated.

"You live in earthquake country," Hannah said. "It's a good wakeup call for people. There could be a big one on its way."

Bay Area Rapid Transit Service has been disrupted but there has been no damage reported and lines are experiencing only five to 10 minute delays.

San Francisco fire officials said there are no reports of further sliding near a recent landslide on Telegraph Hill

The earthquake shook basketball fans at Haas Pavilion on the University of California's campus in Berkeley. The crowd issued a collective "Oooh," as the building briefly shuddered during a timeout in Cal's game against Arizona, then cheered loudly while officials briefly delayed resuming the game.

121. what the shaky-ground specialist says
Georgy Noury just interviewed James Berkland. In italics is excerpted from a review about the book on him:

Jim Berkland is a shaky-ground specialist. This maverick California seismologist predicts earthquakes by means of tides, strange animal behavior, geyser activity, and magnetic-field changes. Cal Orey's sympathetic view of Berkland and his offbeat prognostications cites his impressive record: Each of the seven major earthquakes forecast by Berkland have resulted in fatalities. The Man Who Predicts Earthquakes contains interviews with seismologists around the world and tips on quake preparedness.

On C2C, James Berkland just said there have been 5 missing dog ads this week. Went from 0 to 3, then 4, then 5 in last week.

He said some people saw what they thought was some kind of meteor. Earthquake light? Could have been a transformer shifting, burning.

139. exaggeration by news media
Last spring when we in NJ had torrents of rain, they came out here from NBC/CBS/ABC and were constantly filming the "floods." Oh yes, there were floods but not in that many areas. Anyway, in one segment they were filming live (I think it may have been Today Show but not sure), they had a reporter in a raincoat in a rowboat wailing about all the water. Then all of a sudden, two guys in knee-high waders walk across the screen, right through the water, in front of her!

All those waters weren't even a foot deep. Man did we laugh.

Anyway, here's the link to the earthquake predictor's site (Berkland, see my post upthread):
